PFIによる駅前再開発事業の一環として建て替えられた駅舎である。初期計画段階では既存駅舎の改築であったが、JR四国の無人化促進に伴い、無人駅を新築計画することとなった。
駅の利便性を図るためにロータリーを設けつつ、JRの保線エリアを確保したために、駅舎として計画できるスペースはわずかな三角地しか残されなかったが、その小さな敷地には大きな期待が詰まっていた。
明治・大正時代を思い起こさせる開明学校と重要伝統的建造物群保存地区のある「卯之町の町並み」と呼ばれる街区。昭和の街がそのまま残る商店街。そして通過交通の激しい国道56号線。道を南に1本ずつ順を追うごとに時代が更新されてきた卯之町は、その未来像をもう1本南の駅周辺に求めた。そして、8の字を描くように回遊できるまちづくりをしていこうとしている。
できる限り西予市産の木材を使いながら、小さくても卯之町らしさを造形に活かしたいという意見を踏まえ、長屋門や「わらぐろ」をイメージできる外観を計画し、オリンピック選手村ビレッジプラザ・日本の材木活用リレーで使われた材を含め、西予市産材100％の駅舎となった。オリンピックから里帰りした木材は文字通りUターンしてきたわけである。卯之町駅舎は人も材料も西予市が受け入れるという未来へのメッセージをもった駅として生まれ変わった。（齊藤 正）
A station that connects the city to the future by utilizing locally produced timber
The station building was rebuilt as part of a PFI-based station area redevelopment project.
At the initial stage of the plan, the existing station building was to be renovated, but in accordance with JR Shikoku’s promotion of unmanned stations, it was decided to plan a new building.
While a roundabout was built for the station’s convenience, only a small triangular lot was left for the station building to be planned to secure the area for JR’s track maintenance.
The area is called “Nakancho,” with its Kaimei School reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras and an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. A shopping district where the town of the Showa period remains intact. And National Route 56 with heavy passing traffic. Unomachi, renewed with each successive street to the south, sought its future image one more street south, around the station area. And it is trying to create a town that can be circumnavigated as if drawing the figure of eight.
Based on the opinion that people wanted to show the character of Unomachi in this station even though it is small and use lumber from Seiyo City as much as possible, we planned the appearance of the station building to resemble a “Nagayamon” and “Waraguro.” The building is 100% made of lumber produced in Seiyo City, including lumber used in the Olympic Village Plaza and the Japanese Lumber Utilization Relay. The lumber from the Olympics has literally made a U-turn. The Unomachi Station building has been reborn as a station with a message for the future: Seiyo City welcomes both people and recyclable materials. (Tadashi Saito)
