開催まであと446日に迫った、2025年4月13日より大阪で開催される日本国際博覧会(2025年大阪・関西万博)に向け、〈フランスパビリオン〉のデザインが発表されました。
このパビリオンは地上から屋上までを巡る1本道で構成されており、フランスの豊かな風景を物語の一部として取り上げ、都市における人間と他の生命体との新たな関わり合いを暗示する「Theatrum Naturae(自然劇場)」として構想されています。
リール、パリ、上海に事務所を構える国際的な建築・都市計画事務所 コルデフィ(Coldefy)と、トリノとニューヨークを拠点とするデザイン&イノベーション事務所 カルロ・ラッティ・アソシエイト(Carlo Ratti Associati、以下CRAと表記)が設計しました。

パビリオンは、水平方向だけでなく地上から屋上まで探索することができる。ここでは、自然をランドスケープとしてだけでなく、シェルターとして体験することができる。
広大な庭園の屋根は、パビリオンを保護し、そのエネルギッシュな活動をサポートすると同時に、フランスの多様な自然を紹介している。
このパビリオンは、フランスのサヴォアフェール(フランス語で「伝統や創造性が融合した匠の技」を意味する、特にファッション業界でよく使われる言葉)を讃え、それを前面に押し出している。
フランスの実験的な舞台芸術の歴史に敬意を表し、パビリオンはカーテンのようなファサードによって姿を現し、見物客や来場者に絶え間ないスペクタクルを提供する。
パビリオンは、自然との共生の原則のもと、自然と人工物、人間と植物の生命が融合した流動的な場所である。1つの相互依存的な共同体であり、同様の権利と場所を共有する。
〈フランスパビリオン〉は、プレファブ部材と自然の要素を組み合わせた組み立て式のマシンとして構想されている。 そのためこのパビリオンは、万博というイベントを超えた、より広い生命のサイクルの一部なのである。
気候帯に合わせて適切に配置されたパビリオンの植物は、開催国で成長し続ける。
コルデフィとCRAによる〈フランスパビリオン〉は、21世紀におけるフランスの文化と自然環境への貢献を示すために構成されている。地球上の人間と人間以外の生命との間をデザインがいかに橋渡しを行い、自然や人工の生息地に彼らを迎え入れるかを示す。
また、フランスの多様な生態系を前面に押し出し、建物と来館者の動線における不可欠な要素としている。
人間の感覚を称える一本の小道がパビリオンを通り抜け、3つの行為「上昇」、「自然の発見」、「地上への帰還」に伴う体験をつくり上げる。
地上からプロセニアムアーチのように上昇し、官能的な階段で展望バルコニーに向かい、カーテンの敷居を越えて無限ループをつくる。このループによって、緑豊かなテラスに出る前に、建物の内部空間を完全に探索することができる。
パビリオンの屋上には庭園があり、パビリオンの上部を保護するバリアのような役割を果たしている。来場者は庭を歩きながら、山から海岸まで、フランスのさまざまな環境を旅することになる。
それは物語のクライマックスを表し、私たちと自然とのつながりの重要な実感を明らかにする劇の結末に似ている。
循環型の建築手法で設計されたこのパビリオンは、フランスの人間や人間以外の生活のさまざまな側面をつなぐ赤い糸であるだけでない。プレファブリケーションと自然の要素をシームレスに融合させ、万博というつかの間の時間枠をはるかに超えた再利用とリサイクルの好循環の中にその存在を埋め込んでいる。
このデザインは、フランスの建築スタジオ コルデフィとイタリアの建築・イノベーション事務所CRAによって共同開発された。国際的な設計・施工会社であるリモンド・グループがメインコントラクターを務め、日本の安井建築設計事務所は、エンジニアリングと現地コンプライアンスに関する専門知識を提供する。
コルデフィの創設パートナーであるトーマス・コルデフィ(Thomas Coldefy)は次のように語る。
「フランス館は来場者を生命の劇場へと誘う。この作品では、来場者は役者であると同時に観客でもあり、パビリオン内の小道を通り抜け、人類と環境との本質的な共生を演出し、最終的には、私たちと自然とのつながりの必要性を認識するよう促すのである。」
CRAの創設パートナーであるカルロ・ラッティ(Carlo Ratti)は次のように語る。
「気候危機の中で変化する今日の博覧会の役割に対処しようとするとき、私たちは、有機的であれ技術的であれ、さまざまな形の知性を組み合わせて、人と自然のつながりを再定義するために、自然と人工的なものの関係を想像する新しい方法を模索しなければならない。」

The pavilion can be explored from side to side, but also from the ground up to the roof: here, nature is experienced both as landscape and as shelter. A vast garden roof shelters the pavilion and supports its energetic regulation, while showcasing the diversity of French nature.Theatrum Naturae

Coldefy and CRA unveil the design of the French Pavilion at Osaka Expo 2025, titled ‘Theatrum Naturae’, or “Theatre of Nature”, reconfigured to show France’s contribution to culture and the natural environment in the 21st century. The architecture of the French Pavilion illustrates how design bridges the gap between human and non-human life across the planet on our planet, welcoming them into our natural and artificial habitats. It brings France’s multiple ecosystems to the fore, making them an integral part of the building and the visitors’ path.The design is jointly developed by French architecture studio Coldefy and Italian architecture and innovation practice CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati. International design & build firm RIMOND Group acts as the main contractor. Japanese firm Yasui Sekkei provides engineering and local compliance expertise.
A pavilion celebrating human senses
A single pathway celebrating human senses takes the visitors through the Pavilion, creating an experience divided into what could be considered three acts: Ascent, Discovery of Nature, and Return to the Ground. Rising from ground level in an “arc de scène”, the experience begins by taking a sensual staircase that winds to form an observation balcony before crossing a curtain threshold to create an infinite loop. This loop allows for a complete exploration of the interior space of the building, encompassing its entire volume, before opening onto the verdant terrace.Inhabited garden
The journey culminates on the Pavilion’s rooftop, featuring a landscaped garden crowning the building, resembling a slice of nature serving as a protective barrier above the pavilion—a space of common ground welcoming all living species. As visitors walk through the garden, they take a journey through the different environs of France, from the mountains to the coast.It represents the climax of the narrative, akin to the conclusion of a play that reveals the vital realization of our connection to nature.
Sustainable and circular design
Designed within a circular architectural approach, the pavilion is not only a red thread linking the many aspects of French human and more-than-human life. It also seamlessly blends prefabricated and natural elements, embedding its existence in a virtuous loop of reuse and recycling that extends far beyond the fleeting timeframe of the World Expo.– For Thomas Coldefy, founding partner of Coldefy: “The French Pavilion invites visitors to enter the theater of life. Both actors and spectators in this production, visitors traverse a path through the Pavilion that stages the essential symbiosis between humanity and its environment, ultimately urging them to become aware of the vital necessity of our connection to nature.”

Carlo Ratti Associati
CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati is an international design and innovation practice based in Turin, Italy, and New York City. Drawing on Carlo Ratti’s research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the office is currently involved in many projects across the globe, embracing every scale of intervention – from furniture to urban planning. Among recent projects are the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020, the biophilic skyscraper CapitaSpring in Singapore, the urban curatorship of Manifesta 14 Prishtina biennial, the redesign of the Agnelli Foundation HQ in Turin, and the master plan for Milan Innovation District (MIND). The 2025 Osaka World Expo (Japan) will take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025, centered around the theme “Designing the Future, Designing Our Lives of Tomorrow,” structured around three sub- themes: “Saving Lives,” “Inspiring Lives,” “Connecting Lives.” It will be held on Yumeshima Island, an artificial island in Osaka Bay, spanning 155 hectares. The overall architecture has been entrusted to the architect Sosuke Fujimoto. All Pavilions will be connected by a “roof ring” with a diameter of 615m and a circumference of 2km, distributed across three macro-zones: Green World, Pavilion World, and Water World.
