中国・武漢の島に位置する〈LuxeIsland Farm〉は、動物飼育エリア、ワークショップスペース、小売・飲食施設からなるレクリエーション施設です。

「アート＋自然＋文化観光」という理念のもと、深圳を拠点に活動する建築・インテリアデザインスタジオヴァリアス・アソシエイツ（Various Associates）が設計しました。

武漢に誕生した「アート＋自然＋文化観光」のユートピア

水との深い結びつきという武漢の歴史に根ざし、〈LuxeIsland Farm〉は蛇行する水路と刻まれた谷によって形成された景観から生まれたものであり、土地のリズムを受け入れている。

景観の核：LUXEOASISのマイクロバケーション地

江岸区・朱家河沿いに位置する本プロジェクトは、総面積230,000m²を誇る。北は丘陵、南は桟橋に挟まれたこの場所は、「アート＋自然＋文化観光」の理念を体現する、エコレクリエーション・美的教育・レジャー小売・文化創造を融合したマイクロバケーション地として構想された。

ヴァリアス・アソシエイツは、〈LuxeIsland Farm〉の建築・インテリアデザインを担当した。島西側の基幹施設として、都市型ユートピアと武漢の新名所創出を目指している。「未来・楽しさ・交流」をテーマに、隕石を思わせる建築形態と竹細工を対比させ、没入型環境を構築しているのが特徴である。

建築的トーテム：隕石を思わせる竹編みの屋根

「『落下した隕石』を思わせる建物が谷間に点在する。竹編みの屋根は牧草地の丘から自然に生え出たかのように見え、繊細で移ろいゆく影を落とし、自然の地形と視覚的な対話を繰り広げる。これが私たちが〈LuxeIsland Farm〉のために創り出した建築的トーテムである。」

〈LuxeIsland Farm〉の円形レイアウトは、動物飼育エリア、クリエイティブワークショップ、小売・飲食施設を結びつけ、没入体験と運営効率のバランスを実現している。新たな構造物は景観に溶け込み、敷地全体に連続的な視覚的リズムを生み出す。

岩塊のような建築ボリュームは、ミストシステムと在来植物から優しく浮かび上がる。緑化屋根を備えた半地下式の動物飼育区画は建物の視覚的ボリュームを軽減し、開放的な農場を自然に溶け込ませている。

建築には竹・木材・石材といった自然素材が融合されている。文化的象徴である竹細工は、現代的な視覚言語として再解釈された。機能面では動物との交流・親子教育・市場活動・イベントを統合し、美学と実用性を両立する柔軟な空間を形成している。

動物飼育エリア：地形と一体化し出会いを育む空間

丘陵に抱かれた動物飼育エリアは散在し、一部は地中に埋没しており、地形とシームレスに溶け込んでいる。農場は周囲の景観と一体化し、建築と自然の境界を解きほぐしているのである。各構造体は、人と動物の間、人と自然の間といった「出会い」を育む設計となっている。

動物ゾーンは生息環境・交流・生態教育を融合し、囲い・休憩パビリオン・カフェ＆ドーナツ店が機能的な集積を形成する。低介入設計により囲いを斜面下に配置することで視覚的圧迫を軽減した。緩やかな傾斜は動物の草地移動を可能にし、土被りのシェルターは安全と快適性を提供している。

開放的な放牧場、砂場、木造フレーム、日陰構造により、アルパカや鹿など多様な動物のための環境を創出した。デザインは安全性と間近な交流体験のバランスを取り、子どもと動物の感情的な絆を育んでいる。

クリエイティブワークショップ：光と影が織りなす交流空間

クリエイティブワークショップは、視覚的に軽やかでサステナブルな、軽量の竹編み構造である。編み上げられたドームと石のような柱は周囲の植物や動物と調和し、没入感のある自然と一体となった空間を創出している。

竹製ドームの三角形の切り抜きが、動的な光と影のパターンを散りばめる。主要な社交拠点として、この空間は休憩所とカフェの両方の役割を果たす。開放的な中庭は周囲の緑へと広がり、リラックスした職人的な雰囲気を醸し出している。

屋外スペースは休憩エリアであると同時に、自然や動物との交流の場としての機能も兼ね備えている。開閉可能な大型ファサードが屋内と屋外の境界を溶かし、工芸品制作、集会、展示会を支援している。

デザートステーション：銀色の円盤のもとに生まれる活気ある拠点

銀の円盤は陽光に輝き、冷たいお菓子の活気ある拠点となっており、その粗い質感のファサードは、山の岩肌を想起させる触覚的・視覚的記憶を呼び起こす。近くの飼料小屋は動物たちがくつろぐ場となり、穏やかな交流の瞬間を生み出している。

UFOを思わせる形状の第2のデザートステーションは、張り出した金属製のキャノピーが未来的な印象を放つ。他のエリアの土色系とは対照的に、その滑らかな金属のフォルムは敷地内の視覚的ランドマークとして、また敷地内の目印として機能している。

飼料倉庫と洗面所：機能と美学の融合

ペアで配置された飼料倉庫と洗面所は、竹と金属の屋根が彫刻的な軽やかさで浮かび上がっている。

機能的な洗面所は彫刻的な言語で構築されており、石と金属で覆われた入口から、セメントベースの職人技によるコーティングとテクスチャタイルで仕上げられた内部へと続き、清潔で落ち着いた雰囲気を創出している。

多様な空間シナリオ

〈LuxeIsland Farm〉の多くのエリアは柔軟な利用を想定し、イベントや商業活動をサポートする設計である。

おがくず敷きの地面、干し草の俵を座席に、自然の音風景が農場の自由奔放な雰囲気を反映した野外ステージを形成する。夕闇が迫ると、木々の間にきらめくライトの連なりが空間を演劇的で人を惹きつける集いの場へと変える。

軽やかさ、象徴性、そして未来の都市生活のビジョン

素材の選択は、生態系への配慮と表現意図の両方を反映している。木材、竹細工、赤土が建築群に原始的な自然美を吹き込みながら、その芸術的アイデンティティを強化し、地域文化に根ざした存在感を確立している。

〈LuxeIsland Farm〉は、景観統合、文化翻訳、体験型商業を融合した空間実験である。ヴァリアス・アソシエイツは建築形態だけでなく、公共生活の新たなビジョンを形づくったと言える。それは農場であると同時に、未来的なインスタレーションギャラリー、子供たちの遊び場、文化観光のための都市型マイクロバケーション・リトリートでもあるのである。

伝統的な農耕文化の再解釈を通じ、ヴァリアス・アソシエイツは自然の谷間に野性的な魅力と未来的なビジョンを宿す場所を創出した。そこは建築が景観となり、あらゆる出会いが物語の始まりとなる場所である。

LuxeIsland Farm by Various Associates

Rooted in Wuhan’s enduring bond with water, LuxeIsland Farm grows from a landscape shaped by meandering waterways and sculpted valleys, embracing the rhythm of the land.

Located along the Zhujia River in Jiang’an District, the project anchors the core of LUXEOASIS with a total area of 230,000 square meters. Flanked by hillsides to the north and a pier to the south, it is envisioned as a micro-vacation destination that integrates eco-recreation, aesthetic education, leisure retail, and cultural creativity, embodying the vision of “Art + Nature + Cultural Tourism.”

Various Associates was commissioned for the architecture and interior design of LuxeIsland Farm. As a key site on the island’s west side, it aims to create an urban utopia and a new destination for Wuhan. Centered on the themes of “Future, Fun, and Interaction,” the design juxtaposes meteorite-like architectural forms with bamboo weaving, crafting an immersive environment.

“The buildings, resembling ‘fallen meteorites,’ scatter throughout the valley. Their bamboo-woven roofs seem to grow naturally from the pasture hills, casting delicate, shifting shadows and engaging in a visual dialogue with the site’s natural terrain. This is the architectural totem we crafted for LuxeIsland Farm.”

The farm’s circular layout connects animal enclosures, a creative workshop, retail and dining that balances immersive experience with operational efficiency. New structures are embedded into the landscape, creating a continuous visual rhythm across the site. Boulder-like architectural volumes gently emerge from misting systems and native vegetation. Semi-submerged animal enclosures with green roofs reduce the buildings’ visual mass, blending the open farm gently into nature.

The architectural blends natural materials—bamboo, timber, and stone. Bamboo weaving, a cultural symbol, is reinterpreted as a contemporary visual language. Functionally, the farm combines animal interaction, parent-child education, market activities, and events, forming a flexible space that balances aesthetics with functionality.

Scattered Stone-and-Bamboo Structures
A Spatial Narrative Woven into the Landscape

Nestled in the hillside, the animal enclosures are scattered and partially earth-sheltered, blending seamlessly with the terrain. The farm merges with the surrounding landscape, dissolving boundaries between architecture and nature. Each structure is designed to foster encounters — between humans and animals, between people and nature.

The animal zone blends habitat, interaction, and ecological education, with enclosures, resting pavilions, and coffee and donut shops forming a functional cluster. The low-intervention design tucks enclosures beneath the slopes, minimizing their visual presence. The gentle incline allows animals to roam the grass, while the earth-covered shelters provide safety and comfort.

Open paddocks, sand pits, timber frameworks, and shaded structures create diverse environments for alpacas, deer, and other animals. The design balances safety with close, interactive experiences, fostering emotional connections between children and animals.

Creative Workshop
An Open, Unbounded Space for Relaxation and Interaction

The creative workshop is a lightweight bamboo-woven structure, visually light and sustainable. Its woven dome and stone-like columns harmonize with the surrounding plants and animals, creating an immersive, nature-integrated space.

Triangular cut-outs in the bamboo dome scatter dynamic patterns of light and shadow. As a key social hub, this space serves as both a resting stop and a café. The open courtyard extends into the surrounding greenery, cultivating a a relaxed, artisanal atmosphere.

The outdoor space functions as both a rest area and an extension for interaction with nature and animals. Large operable facades dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, supporting artisanal craftwork, gatherings, and exhibitions.

Beneath the Descending Silver Disc:
Ice Cream, Donuts, and a Taste of Joy

A silver disc gleams under the sunlight, forming a lively hub for cold treats. Its rough-textured facade evokes the tactile and visual memory of mountain rocks. A nearby feed house invites animals to linger, creating gentle moments of connection.

A second dessert station, shaped like a UFO with a cantilevered metallic canopy, exudes a striking sense of futurism. In contrast to the earthy tones elsewhere, its sleek metallic form serves as a visual landmark and directional cue within the site.

Feed Barn and Washroom
Where Function Meets Aesthetics

Grouped as a pair, the feed barn and washroom are topped with bamboo-and-metal roofs that float with sculptural lightness. The functional washroom is crafted with a sculptural language: a stone-and-metal-clad entrance leads into an interior finished with cement-based artisanal coatings and textured tiles, creating a clean and atmosphere.

Forest Star Stage at Twilight
Versatile Spatial Scenarios

Many areas of the farm are designed for flexible use, supporting events and commercial activities. Sawdust-covered ground, hay bale seating, and natural soundscapes create an open-air stage that echoes the free-spirited vibe of the farm. As dusk falls, strings of lights twinkle among the trees turning the space into a theatrical and magnetic gathering place.

Lightness, Iconicity, and a Vision of Future Urban Life

Material selection reflects both ecological sensitivity and expressive intent. Wood, bamboo weaving, and red earth imbue the architectural cluster with a primal natural beauty, while reinforcing its artistic identity and grounding it in local culture.

The LuxeIsland Farm is a spatial experiment in landscape integration, cultural translation, and experiential commerce. Various Associates has shaped not only the architectural forms but also a new vision of public life. It is a farm, but also a futuristic installation gallery, a children’s playground, and an urban micro-vacation retreat for cultural tourism.

Through a reimagining of traditional agrarian culture, Various Associates created a place of wild charm and futuristic vision in the heart of a natural valley—where architecture becomes landscape, and every encounter begins a story.
