渋谷駅に直結した大規模商業施設にテナントとして入っている、主に日本酒を味わう飲食店の内装計画である。
計画区画は、7階飲食店フロアの最も奥まったところ、いわゆるどん詰まりに位置している。さらにはフロアの裏動線に囲まれ、窓もなく、立地条件としては厳しいものであった。
よって店舗は、共用区画の通路からの見通しの良さと、飲食を楽しむ客を通行人の視線から守る必要があった。この2つの条件を満たすために、蚊帳（かや）にも似た、半透明の素材を端から端まで渡して、ファサードの上半分を覆った。店舗の暖簾（のれん）を兼ね、店舗の内外の視覚的な広がりを獲得する効果もあるこの素材は、農業で野菜などの防虫や防湿などに使われている寒冷紗（かんれいしゃ）である。
店としての業態は「居酒屋」である。江戸時代からあったとされる作法に則り、日本酒を提供する際には、厳密に温度調整を行っている。冷・温・熱の温度によって味や香りが大きく変わる日本酒を、客それぞれが自分の好みを見つけながら楽しんでもらいたい、これが〈ぬる燗佐藤〉のスタイルである。
クライアントからは、「大人の隠れ家」ともいえる、店としての格式を保ちつつも、女性客でも入りやすいようなカジュアルさを併せ持つデザインを求められた。
この相反する2つの要望を満たすために、まず、インテリアは木の質感を軸として、さらに、日本の伝統的な木造建築のモチーフのひとつである「格天井」を本歌取りすることにした。
日本の書院造りにおける「格天井」は、グリッド状の意匠としての美しさだけでなく、かつてはその下に座る人物の身分の高さを暗示する視覚装置であった。そのなかでも格式の高い「折り上げ天井」を、この店では逆に「折り下げた」デザインとすることで、その古来の意味を組み替え、カジュアルさを暗示している。防火規定で天井に取り付けたスプリンクラーからの散水の妨げになるのを回避しつつ、そのほかの内装規定に抵触しないように努めた、最小限の手数でのデザインでもあった。
天井の仕様は、黒い天井面と同化させるために、松の無垢材を30ミリ角で削り出したあと、側面を黒く塗り潰した。すると、無垢の木という本来の物質性が影をひそめ、まるでモニター上のデカルト座標に描き出される歪んだグリッドフレームのような表現になった。
このようにして、綿密に設えられた格天井だが、最終的には直径550ミリの古木の柱が突き破るという空間デザインに落ち着いた。例えるなら、1970年に大阪で開催された「日本万国博覧会」のシンボルゾーン、建築家の丹下健三が設計した〈お祭り広場〉にかかっていたスペースフレームの大屋根を、岡本太郎の造形作品〈太陽の塔〉が突き破ったように。図らずも、このビルの展望フロアからは、丹下が設計した〈国立代々木競技場〉がよく見える。（田中亮平）
A restaurant that has acquired a sense of space and comfort by using traditional Japanese icons
This is an interior design project for a restaurant situated in the large shopping mall directly connected to Shibuya station. The compartment planned to be used is located in the very end of the restaurant floor of the building, and there were no windows, which makes this project more challenging.
The restaurant facade is created with Noren[*] or shop curtains, made of coarse, see-through fabric originally for gardening, and they cover the entire area. It should have a good visibility from the common corridor, and protect customers from the eyes of passers-by while making sure about the spatial expanse of both the interior and exterior of the restaurant. This is reason that we have chosen the see-through material.
It is an Izakaya, and what is special about this place is that they offer different ways of drinking by strictly adjusting the temperature of sake according to the more than 300-year-old tradition.
The owner has requested that the restaurant should keep the formality while being casual enough for female customers.
In order to fulfill the seemingly conflicting request, we used the coffered ceiling, a traditional Japanese architectural style, as a motif. We purposely created the dropped ceiling, instead of a coved ceiling traditionally associated with a high status, so the meaning has been changed.
Also, 30mm rectangular lumber made of pine trees where the sides are painted black was used so that it assimilates with the black ceiling. As a result, the lumber looks like grid frames which have lost the materiality.
In this way, although the ceilings were carefully arranged, the space design was finally settled by the pillars of an old tree with a diameter of 550 mm. For example, like a Taro Okamoto’s original art’ Tower of the sun’ sculptural work on the large roof of the space frame that was on ‘Festival Square,’ designed by japanese famous architect Kenzo Tange, a symbol zone of the “Japan World Exposition, Osaka 1970”.
Unexpectedly, “Yoyogi National Stadium First Gymnasium” designed by Tange can be seen well from the observatory floor of this building.
Shibuya is a city for young people, which goes through constant redevelopments and changes. Under the parodied, re-designed ceiling, you see many women happily enjoying sake. ( Ryohei Tanaka )

Using Noren as the restaurant facade. Noren is a shop curtain used for traditional shops and restaurant in Japan. We used the see-through gardening fabric this time.
