大開口で外部と一体化する森のサウナ

宿泊施設の一部をリノベーションした貸切りサウナ施設である。
四万温泉は元来湯治場として栄え、多くの人を癒す名所として知られている。この場所にサウナを設置することでより多くの人を癒し、人を惹きつけることが期待される。
既存の木造2階建ての建物は傾斜地に建てられており、その既存部は大きな空洞があり、片側が森に開いた半地下のような状態となっていた。その空間を利用しサウナを計画することとなった。サウナを計画するにあたり、温度が1年を通して一定で、保温性のある半地下空間は地上に比べて適した場所といえる。
周囲は山に囲まれ自然が豊かな場所であり、美しい渓谷に面しているため自然を室内に引き込むようなサウナを計画した。

多くの地域では消防法の関係から開口部の面積が限定されるが、この地域ではそうした規定がないということもあり大開口を設けることができ、四万温泉の美しい森をサウナ内でも体感できるような空間とすることができた。
内装には周囲の自然との調和と肌が触れることを考慮し、耐水性の高いウエスタンレッドシダーを使用している。そこにガラス塗料を塗布することで温度差や湿度の差が激しい、サウナという特殊な環境下でも耐えられるように工夫を施している。

また、軒下の外気浴スペースと内部の仕上げを同一にすることで、より外部と内部が一体的に感じられるようにした。サウナの開口部は耐熱性を考慮し、強化ガラスとしている。
サウナの有効面積が5.74m²に対して5.14m²の開口部と、ほぼ同じ面積の大きな開口が開放感と森との一体感を生み出すサウナとなっている。（西田庸平＋星安康至）

Forest sauna with a large opening that integrates with the outside

It is a private sauna facility that has been renovated from a part of the lodging facility.
Originally, Shima Onsen prospered as a therapeutic hot spring and is known as a famous place to heal many people. By installing a sauna here, it is expected to heal more people and attract more people.
The existing two-story wooden building was built on a slope, and the existing part of the building had a large cavity, like a half-basement with one side open to the forest. The existing part of the building had a large cavity that opened up to the forest on one side, like a half-basement. We decided to use this space to plan a sauna. A semi-subterranean space is more suitable for a sauna than an above-ground space because the temperature is constant throughout the year, and it retains heat.
The area is surrounded by mountains and rich and faces a beautiful ravine, so we planned a sauna that would bring nature into the room.

In many areas, the area of openings is limited due to the Fire Service Act. Still, there is no such regulation in this area, so we were able to create a large opening and create a space where the beautiful forest of Shima Onsen can be experienced even inside the sauna.
For the interior, we used western red cedar, which is highly resistant to water, considering the harmony with the surrounding nature and the fact that it comes in contact with the skin. Glass paint was applied to it so that it can withstand the particular environment of a sauna where temperature and humidity differences are drastic.

In addition, by using the same finishes for the interior and the outdoor bathing space under the eaves, the exterior and interior feel more integrated. The opening of the sauna is made of tempered glass in consideration of heat resistance.
The effective area of the sauna is 5.74m², while the opening is 5.14m². The large space of almost the same area creates a sense of openness and unity with the forest in the sauna. (Yohei Nishida + Koji Hoshiyasu)
