このプロジェクトは、長野県軽井沢町の自然豊かな環境の中に、74室の客室とゲストが自由に寛ぐことのできるパブリックエリアのある宿泊施設をつくるというものである。この場所固有の魅力はカラマツやモミジでつくられた自然豊かな林であり、その豊かな自然をゲストが身近に感じることが、ホテルの最大の魅力になるのではないかと考えた。それらを建築に取り込こむこと、自然環境に調和し、一体化するような建築を実現できるかということがテーマとなった。
自然環境を建物の空間体験として取り込むため、中庭型の配置を採用している。建物の中心となる中庭には、大きなデッキテラスを設け、自然環境を積極的にホテルに引き込む計画としている。また、構造形式についても、木造を採用し環境へ配慮した建築計画としている。
ホテルのパブリックエリアは中庭をぐるりと囲い込むように設け、中庭の自然を常に近くに感じられる空間としている。林に見立てた木材の家具、壁面には中庭の樹木が映り込むスリットミラー、木漏れ日のようなムラのあるマテリアルなどを採用し、中庭と一体化した空間となるよう配慮している。大きなワンルーム空間の中に、コーヒーを提供するカフェ、本を読むライブラリ、庭を眺めるソファスペース、ゲームやデスクワークのできる大テーブルなど、質の違うさまざまな居場所を設けることで、ゲストが自由に心地よく過ごすための空間を実現している。（佐々木達郎）
A forest-like wooden hotel that blends in with the nature of Karuizawa
This project was to create an accommodation facility with 74 guest rooms and public areas where guests can freely relax in the rich natural environment of the town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. The unique attraction of this location is its lush forest of Japanese red pine trees and autumn leaves, and we thought that the hotel’s greatest appeal would be to allow guests to feel close to this rich natural environment. The project’s theme was to incorporate these elements into the architecture and realize an architecture that harmonizes and integrates with the natural environment.
In order to incorporate the natural environment into the spatial experience of the building, we adopted a courtyard-type layout. The central courtyard of the building is a large deck terrace, which is planned to actively draw the natural environment into the hotel. Furthermore, the structural plan also takes into consideration the environment by adopting a wooden structure.
The hotel’s public areas are designed to encircle the courtyard, creating a space in which visitors can always feel close to the natural surroundings of the courtyard. Wooden furniture resembling a forest, slit mirrors on the walls that reflect the trees in the courtyard, and materials with an uneven appearance like sunlight filtering through trees are used to create a space that is integrated with the courtyard. Within the large one-room space, a café serving coffee, a library for reading books, a sofa space looking out on the garden, a large table for playing games or working at a desk, and other various places of different quality have been created to allow guests to spend their time freely and comfortably.
