計画地は静岡県沼津市の中心部、周囲には住宅が建て込み、高等学校が見下ろすように建っている。隣接する住宅群は、新旧含めておおよそ工業製品に覆われたつくりであり、高等学校はRC造で、塀越しにCB造＋折板屋根のガスボンベ庫、金属ゴミ置場、駐車場が隣接している。見える範囲の近隣地にはコンテナが無造作に置かれ、周囲に緑はほとんどない。
これら周辺環境からマテリアルを選定し、空間構成を導き出していくことは間違ってはいない。だが、コンテクストへの応答という思考の流れだけに終始してしまうと、いつのまにかクライアントを置き去りにして、何より建築の奥行きのようなものが失われてしまうと常々感じている。コンテクストを読み解くことと同時に、人の感情に作用するような建築のつくられ方を考えたい。
ここで試みたのは、周辺のコンテクストから空間構成や架構などを読み解くと同時に、この場所において直接的なコンテクストにはなりにくく、また人の触覚に作用する素材―ここでは木材を選定―から寸法体系やディテールを検討し、その両方が融合する状態を求めていった。安価で耐久性のある樹種、手に入りやすい歩掛かりのよい寸法、表情あるテクスチャーなど木材単体のコンテクストを抽出・検証し、30mm×60mm×900mm赤身スギ材を、環境を読み解くための1つの単位とした。スギ板の外壁は高さ方向に900mmに積み上げて形成し、平面方向は60mmに敷き詰め、内部空間は900mmもしくはその半分の450mmという材寸法単位に従って気積を規定した。開口部も同じく規定しつつ、アルミサッシを室内側へセットバックして納め、割付けに合わせて外壁を格子状に抜くことでプライバシーを確保している。唯一大きく開くことのできる南東面にバッファーとなる中庭を設けて光と風を取り込み、テラスは街を抜けた先の山々まで空間をつないでいる。
土地のコンテクストから構築体を生み出すことと、寸法を含めた素材単体のコンテクストから空間の気積やしつらえ、ディテールを生み出すことは役割が違う。前者は自然との応答を、後者は人との応答を意味し、それらを融合することで自然と構築体による長大な時間軸の中に人の感情や記憶の拠り所をつくる。その混ざり合った領域が建築なのだと考えている。（山田誠一）
A cedar house that acts on the senses while reading its surroundings
The planned site is in the center of Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, surrounded by houses and a high school overlooking it. The high school is a reinforced Concrete construction with a concrete block structure with a folded-plate roof, a gas cylinder storage facility, a metal trash yard, and a parking lot adjacent to the school. Containers are placed haphazardly on the neighboring land within view, and there is almost no greenery in the surrounding area.
It is not wrong to select materials and derive spatial composition from the surrounding environment. However, I have always felt that if we only focus on the flow of thought in response to the context, we will leave the client behind before we know it, and above all, we will lose a sense of depth in architecture. I would like to think about how architecture can be created in a way that affects people’s emotions while at the same time deciphering the context.
What we attempted here was to decipher the spatial composition and structure from the surrounding context and, at the same time, to examine the dimensional system and details from materials that are unlikely to be directly contextualized in this place but that also affect people’s sense of touch (in this case, wood was selected), and to seek a state of fusion of both. We sought a state of fusion of both. The context of the individual pieces of wood, such as inexpensive and durable species, accessible dimensions, and expressive textures, were extracted and verified, and a 30mm x 60mm x 900mm piece of cedar (red side) was selected as one unit for deciphering the environment. The exterior walls of the cedar boards were stacked 900mm in the height direction, laid 60mm in a flat direction, and the volume of the interior space was specified according to the dimension unit of 900mm or half of that, 450mm. The openings are also defined in the same way. Still, the aluminum sashes are set back from the interior, and the exterior walls are cut out in a grid pattern to match the layout, ensuring privacy. A buffer courtyard on the southeast side, the only side that can be opened wide, brings in light and wind, and a terrace connects the space to the mountains beyond the city.
Creating a structure from the context of the land and creating spatial volume, decoration, and detailing from the context of individual materials, including dimensions, play different roles. The former is a response to nature, while the latter is a response to people. By fusing the two, we can create a base for people’s emotions and memories within a long axis of nature and the built form. I believe that architecture is the realm in which these two elements are blended. (Seiichi Yamada)
