計画地は田畑に囲まれた集落にあり、広い敷地には築150年ほどの母屋（建主の祖母の家）と蔵が建っている。13年前、建主の祖母が高齢となり、建物の維持が困難になり始めたころ、音楽家である建主が母屋に住むことになり、部屋の一部をコンサートスペースとして改修した。
今回、建主の親も母屋で暮らすことになり、建主の寝室として、また家族や海外からの音楽家が逗留できる場所として、離れを計画することになった。
建主からは「リビングのような場所」と寝室、水回りが求められた。「リビングのような場所」とは、世界中から集まる音楽仲間が気楽に集えて、楽器の演奏もできる場所のことである。来訪者を自然と招き入れるよう、離れを敷地に入ってすぐ横に配置し、建具のない外部と繋がったオープンな土間空間を離れの横に設えた。建物内外の境界をなくしたこの土間は、アプローチと一体となって使用できるコンサートスペースにもなる。
また母屋のコンサートスペースも土間が広がっており、行き来しやすいようにしている。寝室はオープンなリビングとは対照的に、人からの視線を感じないよう窓の位置を検討し、落ち着いて過ごせるようにした。
外壁は敷地内の土を使用した土壁として、これから先も母屋と同じように建物の記憶が伝わり、またできる限り人の手によってつくり出せる素材とした。敷地内にある蔵に保存されていた古い棚などを建物内に配置し、古いものと新しいものが混在する場所になっている。
新しくできた離れも「想いが帰る庵」として、建主や立ち寄る人々がそれぞれの想いを馳せる場所として、これから先も存在し続けてほしいと思う。（岡田佳子）
An annex with a dirt floor like a living room where musicians gather
The project site is located in a village surrounded by rice paddies. 150-year-old main house (the owner’s grandmother’s house) and a warehouse stand on a large site. Thirteen years ago, when the owner’s grandmother became old, and it became difficult to maintain the building, the owner, a musician, decided to live in the main house and renovated some rooms as a concert space.
This time, the owner’s parents also decided to live in the main house, and a separate room was planned as the owner’s bedroom and a place for family members and musicians from overseas to stay.
The owner requested a “place like a living room,” a bedroom, and a bathroom. The “living room” was to be a place where musicians from all over the world could gather comfortably and play their instruments. To invite visitors naturally, the house is located right next to the entrance to the site, and an open earthen floor space connected to the outside without any fittings is placed next to the house. This dirt floor, which eliminates the boundary between the inside and outside of the building, also serves as a concert space that can be used as one with the approach.
The concert space in the main house also has an earthen floor, making it easy to come and go. In contrast to the open living room, the bedrooms are designed to be calm and relaxing, with the windows positioned so as not to be seen by others.
The exterior walls are made of clay from the site, a material that will carry the same memory of the building as the main house and can be created by human hands as much as possible. Old shelves and other items that had been stored in a warehouse on the site were placed inside the building, creating a place where the old and the new are intermingled.
We hope that the newly built house will continue to exist in the future as a “hermitage where memories return,” a place where the owners and people who stop by can reflect on their own lives. (Yoshiko Okada)
