建築主兼現場監督であるクライアントとともに設計監理を進めたプロジェクトである。
平面計画・断面計画および素材やディテール設計までクライアントが行い、建築家はそれを実現するためのエンジニア的・意匠的なサポートおよびクライアントの提案に対するエスキースチェックに徹するというプロセスで進められた。
無駄のない動線計画・大きなリビングという明快な空間ダイアグラムにより構成された平面を、ガルバリウム製の切妻型外皮で包んだ30坪に満たない平屋建ての住宅である。ダイニングテーブルを兼ねた大きなキッチンカウンターのあるリビングダイニングとプライベートな個室群を、棟木を軸として対称配置することでそれぞれの空間は片流れで気積の大きな空間となっている。
玄関前まで伸びる深い軒下空間は木質外壁を守る庇の役割を果たしつつ、玄関として人を迎え入れ、ピロティとして利用できる自由なスペースとなっており、クライアントの住みこなしによって可能性の広がる、特定の用途がない空間となっている。
住宅の形式・プライバシーの概念はかつての姿とは形を変えながらも、それでも人が家に集まるコミュニティを手放すことはしなかった奄美大島である。近年の屋内での密集を避ける流れには抗うことができない時代だからこそ半屋外で集まれる空間を住宅に設けることは重要である。雨が多い気候から考えると、そこには屋根が有るほうがよいが、集まり方を制限するような単機能の空間であってはならないと考えた。
この住宅では、本体の切妻型のボリュームを延長することで軒下空間をつくり出すことに挑戦した。この深い軒を支える両袖壁はスラストを抑えるために高基礎を採用し、水平材のない純粋な切妻形態を実現している。
クライアントにとって、これまで現場監督として積んできた経験の集大成的な建築であり、素材・ディテールともに質および難易度の高い施工がなされた。シンプルな構成ながら、ハゼの割付け、雨樋や建具、巾木の納まりにいたるまで、あらゆる点において施工図＋モックアップによる検討のうえで施工にいたっている。さらには棟梁を務めたのがクライアントの実弟にあたり、家族で営んできた工務店にとっての集大成でもあるのだ。
住宅のタイトルとしてつけた〈Ani-house〉であるが、島では「Ani（アニ・兄）」とは血の繋がりがない年長者に対しても敬意をもって使われる言葉である。実の弟である棟梁にとっての「兄の家」というだけでなく、クライアント本人が技術者として一人前の「兄」であるという宣言でもある。住宅とは本来、このように強い想いをもって立ち向かってしかるべき、というメッセージを強く感じたプロジェクトであった。（小野良輔）
A house that carries on the local community under an extended gable roof
This project was designed and supervised by the client, who was also the architect and site supervisor.
The client was responsible for the floor plan, sectional plan, materials, and detailed design. At the same time, the architect provided engineering and design support for the realization of the project, as well as an escape check of the client’s proposal.
The plan of this one-story house is not even about 100m² composed of a clear spatial diagram with a lean flow plan and a large living room and is wrapped in a galvanized gable-type exterior skin. The living/dining room with a large kitchen counter that doubles as a dining table, and the private rooms are symmetrically arranged around the ridgepole, creating a single-flow, large-volume space.
The deep eaves space extending to the front entrance serves as a shelter to protect the wooden exterior walls while at the same time welcoming people in as an entrance and providing a free space that can be used as pilotis, creating a space with no specific use.
Although the concept of formality and privacy of the house has changed its form from what it once was, Amami Oshima still did not give up the community where people gather in their homes. It is important to provide semi-outdoor gathering spaces in houses because we live in an age when it is impossible to resist the recent trend of avoiding dense indoor gatherings. Given the rainy climate, it is better to have a roof over the house, but it should not be a mono-functional space that restricts the way people gather.
In this house, the challenge was to create a space under the eaves by extending the gabled volume of the main body. To support these deep eaves, high foundations were adopted for the two side walls to reduce thrust, and a pure gable form without horizontal materials was realized.
For the client, this building was the culmination of his experience as a site supervisor, and the quality and difficulty of the materials and details were high. Although the structure is simple, every aspect of the construction, from the allocation of the gutters and downspouts to the fittings and skirting boards, was examined using construction drawings and mock-ups before construction. The house’s structure was also the culmination of a family business, as the master builder was the client’s younger brother.
“Ani-house” is the title of the house. On the island, “Ani” is also a term of respect for an older person not related to the client by blood. It is not only an “elder brother’s house” for the master builder, the younger brother, but also a declaration that the client himself is a full-fledged “elder brother” as an engineer. This project powerfully conveyed that a house should be approached with such a strong desire. (Ryosuke Ono)
