奄美大島南部の集落内、美しい砂浜が眼前に広がる敷地における別荘の計画。
奄美大島の伝統的な建築は、高温多湿や台風災害、またかつての貧困の苦しみといった過酷な風土を乗り越えるため先人が導き出した切実さや力強さがあると感じる。
現在失われつつある、この力強さの遺伝子を継承した建築空間が、この集落に対してもクライアントの別荘としてもふさわしいと考えた。
そこで、プロポーションからディテールや工法などに、島の風景や建築、あるいは暮らしをコラージュするように統合するプロセスを組み込んで設計をしている。
1階はベッドスペースを除いてほとんどが土間であり、海で遊んで体についた砂を運んできたり、釣った魚を持ってきたりと、ラフな暮らしや用途にも気兼ねなく使うことができる、島暮らしのための空間である。
小屋裏は1室40畳の大空間であり、非日常を許容するおおらかな空間として、生活空間である1階の頭上にただ存在している。
かつては食べ物を貯蔵するという、生死に関わるシリアスな機能を担っていた高倉（高床式倉庫）のがらんどうな空間は、この建築において人が集まったり子どもが走り回ったり、あるいは何もせずただ波の音を聞く余暇を過ごしたり、そこで許容される行為を豊かにする付加価値的空間へ読み替えられた。
小屋裏の大空間はトラス構造による安定性と、見付面積を抑えることによる耐風圧性能を両立させるために方形屋根形状をベースにしている。
この空間構成がつくり出すプロポーションにどこか懐かしさを覚える島っちゅ（島人）は少なくない。
敷地周縁に巡らせた塀は、無塗装の杉板をコンクリート柱に落とし込んだだけのつくりで、必要に応じて開放することも可能になっている。無塗装のため、はじめは外壁と同じ色の杉板が経年変化でグレーに変わり、より周囲に馴染むようにしている。
頂部は排熱のための機械換気設備と、日よけの装飾木工を設け、室内温熱環境の向上を図っている。また小屋裏の床はすのこ状になっており、自然風とトップライトからの光を1階まで引き込むことで空間全体が過ごしやすい環境となる。
住み手が不在の時間が長い別荘建築は、家主が不在の際はどうしても防犯上閉じたものにせざるを得ない。
しかしながら、佇まいに風景の一部としての自然さがあると、建築は集落に溶け込み愛されるものになる。言うなれば、風景の一部として公共性を持つということである。
単なるノスタルジーを超えた、島の遺伝子にささやきかけるような建築を目指した。（小野良輔）
A villa that is familiar with island life that accepts various acts
This project is for a villa on a site with a beautiful sandy beach in front of it in a village in southern Amami Oshima.
I feel that the traditional architecture of Amami Oshima has a sense of earnestness and strength that our ancestors derived from overcoming the harsh climate of high temperature and humidity, typhoon disasters, and the suffering of poverty in the past.
I thought an architectural space that inherited the genes of this strength, which is currently being lost, would be appropriate for this village and the client’s villa.
Therefore, the design incorporates a process of integrating the landscape, architecture, and lifestyle of the island into the proportions, details, and construction methods, like a collage.
Except for the bed space, most of the first floor has a dirt floor, which can be used for rough living and other purposes, such as bringing sand from the sea or fish caught in the ocean.
The shed is a large space of 40 square meters per room, and it exists just above the living space on the first floor as a generous space that allows for the unusual.
The space of the stilt warehouse, which used to have a severe life-or-death function of storing food, has been reinterpreted in this architecture as a value-added space that enriches the activities allowed in the space, such as gathering people, children running around, or simply spending leisure time listening to the sound of the waves without doing anything.
The large space in the back of the shed is based on a square roof shape to achieve the stability of a truss structure and the wind pressure resistance by reducing the footprint.
Many islanders feel nostalgic about the proportions created by this spatial configuration.
The fence around the site’s perimeter is unpainted cedar boards dropped into concrete pillars, which can be opened up as needed. Because it is unpainted, the cedar panels, which are initially the same color as the exterior walls, change to gray over time to blend in better with the surroundings.
The top of the building has a mechanical ventilation system for heat exhaustion and decorative woodwork for awnings to improve the indoor thermal environment. In addition, the floor of the shed is made of sawtooth, which draws in natural air and light from the top light to the first floor, creating a comfortable environment for the entire space.
When the house owner is not home for a long time, the house must be closed for security reasons.
However, if the appearance has a naturalness as part of the landscape, the architecture will blend into the village and be loved. In other words, it has a public nature as part of the landscape.
I aimed to create an architecture that goes beyond mere nostalgia and whispers to the genes of the island. (Ryosuke Ono)
