画家の妻と、夫の2人が暮らすアトリエ付き住居である。敷地は複雑に入り組んだ街路の低層密集住宅地の一角、間口9.5m・奥行6.8mの20坪に満たない狭小地であった。北面2項道路のみに接道し周囲は2階建ての隣戸が肉薄している。このような低層密集狭小地では、種々の法規に加え採光や通風、プライバシーなどの基本的な住環境の確保さえも極めてシビアとなる。
そこで厳しい地上面ではなく、上空の手つかずの自然環境に着目した。建蔽率限度の10坪弱の平面としたうえで、まるで植物が光を求めて幹を伸ばすように建物を上へと伸ばし、頂部に高さ1mの透明なクリアストリ（高窓のある上層レイヤ）を設け、プライバシーを制御しつつ上空の豊かな自然環境をつかみ取ることを考えた。
最終高さは道路斜線、7m通し柱の搬入路、構造合理性、空間バランスで決定した。接地面の小さな縦長の建築に対し在来軸組と門型ラーメンの複合構造を採用。構造を外周部に集約し倉庫的な自由度の高い内部としつつ、記憶に新しい熊本の長周期地震をふまえ剛性を高めている。
内部は、独立した巨大家具のような階段（吹き抜け）を中心に住戸全体が1つの立体ワンルームとなっている。個々の居場所をシークエンスとして連続させ、広がりや体験の最大化・複雑化にて狭小ながらおおらかで変化に富む住まいを目指した。
また、縦長の一体空間は内部高低差・温度差による自然換気や住戸全体への自然採光を可能とする。温熱では、夏季は庇とLow-E遮熱ガラスで直射を防ぎ、擬似ソーラーチムニーとしてのクリアストリからの自然排熱を、冬季は直射を採り込み、十分な躯体断熱と高窓以外の窓にLow-E断熱ガラスを用い、空調設備の負荷を極力抑える。
少子高齢化、物価高騰、エネルギー問題など、今回のような都市型コンパクトハウスの需要は今後も続くであろう。本案を通し、厳しい敷地条件による逆境をはねのけ、むしろおおらかで自由な暮らしを獲得した現代住宅の一例を示したい。（有吉弘輔）
A house in a small, densely-packed area where high windows create a healthy environment
It is a residence with an atelier where a painter’s wife and her husband live. The site was a narrow lot of less than 66 m²with a frontage of 9.5 m and a depth of 6.8 m in a low-rise, dense residential area on a complicated street. Only the north side of the lot is tangential to the existing road and is surrounded by neighboring two-story houses. In such a low-rise, dense, narrow lot, in addition to various regulations, the basic living environment, such as lighting, ventilation, and privacy, is extremely difficult to maintain.
Therefore, we focused on the pristine natural environment above rather than on the severe conditions on the ground. The building was designed to be slightly less than 33 m², which is the maximum building-to-land ratio and to extend upward like a plant growing its trunk in search of light.
The final height was determined based on the road diagonal, the 7-meter pillar loading ramp, structural rationality, and spatial balance. A composite structure of a conventional frame and ramen was adopted for a vertical building with a small ground plane. The structure is concentrated on the perimeter to create a warehouse-like interior with a high degree of freedom while at the same time increasing rigidity in light of the long-period earthquake in Kumamoto, which is still fresh in memory.
Inside, the entire dwelling unit is a single three-dimensional room centered around an independent staircase (stairwell) that resembles a giant piece of furniture. The individual places of residence are connected as a sequence, maximizing and complicating the expanse and experience, aiming to create a generous and varied residence in spite of its small size.
The integrated vertical space allows for natural ventilation and natural lighting throughout the entire dwelling due to internal height and temperature differences. In terms of heat, the eaves and Low-E insulating glass prevent direct sunlight in summer, and natural exhaust heat from the clear strips as a pseudo solar chimney is used in winter.
Demand for urban compact houses like this is expected to continue due to the declining birthrate, aging population, rising prices, and energy issues. Through this proposal, we would like to show an example of a modern house that has overcome the adversity of severe site conditions and achieved a more generous and freer lifestyle. (Kosuke Ariyoshi)
