ニッチに飾られた花器やアートは、空間を美しく彩る。それは、小さく囲まれた場所で灯りに照らされる対象物が、それを観る者に主役としての安定感と存在感を示すからである。
ヌックに入ると、人は居心地のよさや精神的な安らぎを感じる。それは、自己が中心に据えられた身体スケールの空間に、建築の庇護性を感じるからである。
鑑賞する対象物を内包するニッチと、内側に身体を受容するヌック。一見すると真逆の性格をもつ空間のように思えるが、客体・主体の関係を横断して考えると、どちらも「空間を囲んで場所をつくる」という最も原初的な建築行為によって成立していることが再認識できる。
本プロジェクトは約100年前に建てられた木造平屋住宅の改修計画である。採光条件が悪く物置部屋になっていた続き間を圧縮して納戸とし、その分玄関と和室を拡張している。
玄関では、廊下を910mm西側に付け替えることで、小さな溜まりスペースを生み出し、そこにニッチの飾り棚を設えている。もともと壁があった場所に残る独立柱は株付きの磨き丸太とし、構造的な強度を担保しつつ主体が属する側の空間を象徴する意匠要素として昇華させた。
和室は、既存の畳を撤去し床暖房付きのフローリングに改修している。続き間の半分をヌックとして和室側に取り込んで8畳から12畳に部屋を拡げ、造作ソファでくつろげる空間を設えた。ペンダントライトやスタンドライトを用いて薄暗い空間にならないように配慮しつつ、既存の欄間をそのまま活かしたり、ヌック周りの壁の明度を1トーン落とした左官壁で仕上げたりすることで、「囲まれ感」をより強く感じられるデザインとしている。さらに、少し遊び心のある空間操作として、ソファ正面の壁に飾り棚を設け、ヌックの中にニッチをつくるという入れ子構造をつくった。
人との出会いや旅立ちの起点となる玄関と、人が集まって団欒する和室。
古くからこの家に連綿と流れる時間を、そっと静かに囲む空間を設計した。（中倉康介）
Renovation of an old private house with niches and nooks
Vases and artworks displayed in a niche add beauty to a space. This is because objects illuminated by lights in a small enclosed space show their stability and presence as the main subject to the viewers.
When entering a nook, one feels a sense of comfort and spiritual ease. This is because they feel the shelter of architecture in a body-scale space in which the self is placed at the center.
A niche contains the objects to be viewed, and a nook receives the body inside. It seems that these spaces have diametrically opposite characteristics at first glance, but when we consider the relationship between objects and subjects transversely, we can recognize that both are formed by the most primitive architectural practice of “enclosing a space and creating a place.”
This project is a renovation of a one-story wooden house built about 100 years ago. A space that was used as a storage room due to poor lighting conditions is reduced to separated areas, and the entrance and Japanese-style rooms are expanded instead.
In the entrance, the corridor is replaced on the west side by 910mm to create a small gathering space where a niche shelf is placed. A polished log with stumps is used for the remaining column, which is sublimated as a design element that symbolizes the space on the side where the main body belongs while ensuring structural strength.
In the Japanese-style room, the existing tatami mats are removed and replaced with walnut flooring with floor heating. Half of the adjoining room is taken in as a nook on the Japanese-style room side to expand the space from 14.6 to 21.9 sqm, and a wide sofa is provided. Pendant lights and stand lights are used to prevent the space from becoming too dim, while the existing transoms are used as they were, and the walls around the nook are plastered one tone darker to create a stronger sense of ” enclosed space. ” In addition, to manipulate the space with a bit of playfulness, I created a nesting structure by placing a display shelf on the wall in front of the sofa. In other words, by creating a niche inside the nook.
The entranceway is the starting point for encounters and departures, and the Japanese-style room is where people gather to enjoy themselves.
I designed a space that gently and quietly surrounds the time that has passed in this house since ancient times. (Kosuke Nakakura)
