僕らのつくり出すこれからの建築は、物理的なデザインではなくクライアントと世界へ「価値」を創造するものでありたい。
九州・桜坂にある100年以上の伝統を誇る人形師・中村人形のプロジェクト「傀藝堂（かいげいどう）」もこの実践のひとつだ。
従来、展示と販売の機会は百貨店の企画展などに限られているため、彼らは自分たちのギャラリーをつくることに決めた。またこの先の100年も続く、地域伝統に根差した建築を望んでいた。
僕らはこれに応えるため、文字通り「地域や歴史に接続する建築」を構想した。
1：この地域に特徴的なY字路を取り込む。ギャラリーは3つのY字路で計画されており、さまざまな選択肢と回遊性を与え、観賞時間を自然と引き延ばすことで商業的効果を生み出す。またこれは「人」のかたちをしたアイコニックなプランとなった。
2：江戸時代からの石垣擁壁の連なるこの地域に調和（あるいは擬態）させる、新たな左官擁壁をデザインした。地元筑後川の川砂利などを使い伝統的な技法左官「掻き落とし」で大きな多面体を施工することに成功した。
3：ギャラリーの最奥部には「光の間」として上部約5Mからの自然光のみの空間を用意。ハイライトとなる人形1体のための間とした。この場所の緯度経度特有の、刻々と1年中変容する自然光によって、繊細な彫刻の造形がより際立つ。「建築家は光を操る。彫刻家は光と遊ぶ」というガウディの言葉をクライアントと共有しながらつくりあげた。
以上のコンセプトとデザインは、僕たちが今まで考えてきた「VCD」メソッド（図）にも沿っている。設計やコンセプトなどの設計側のスタンスからプロジェクトをスタートするのではなく、顧客のV（バリュー、ここでは将来への事業計画、経済的目標、地域貢献）を徹底的に話し合い、それを実現するC（コンセプト）やD（デザイン）を考える。またそれを世界に発信する手伝いをする。
ギャラリーの上階は施主の住宅。僕が北欧で学んだ光の哲学を取り入れた、多面体の天井が反射させる間接照明だけで構成された、廊下のない三角形のリビングで住人自身が「光を選ぶ」生活を提案している。（神谷修平）
Gallery and residence linked to the community and history
Our architectural creations are not just about physical design, but about creating ‘value’ for clients and the world. One such practice is the ‘KAIGEIDO’ project for Nakamura Ningyo, a Japanese traditional figural craftsman in Sakurazaka, Kyushu, boasting a tradition of over 100 years. Conventionally, exhibition and sales opportunities of their industry were limited to department store events, so they decided to create their own gallery. They desired an architecture rooted in regional tradition that would last for another 100 years. To meet this, we literally conceived an architecture that ‘connects to the local area and its history.’
We incorporated the distinctive Y-shaped roads of the area. The gallery is planned around three Y-shaped roads, offering various choices and circulation, naturally extending viewing time and thus creating commercial benefits. This also became an iconic plan in the shape of a ‘person’ in Chinese Character, a symbol of Ningyo.
We designed a new plastered retaining wall that harmonizes with the stone walls from the Edo period in this area. We successfully constructed a large polyhedron using traditional plastering techniques called ‘Kakiotoshi,’ utilizing local Chikugo River leather gravel.
At the deepest part of the gallery, we created a space with only natural light coming from about 5 meters above, known as the ‘Skylight Area.’ It is designed specifically for the display of the most important doll, the highlight of the collection. The delicate sculptures are enhanced by the ever-changing natural light unique to this area. This was created while sharing Gaudi’s words with the client: ‘Architects manipulate light, sculptors play with light.’
These concepts and designs align with our ‘VCD’ method (diagram), which we have been considering. Instead of starting projects from the design perspective, such as planning and concept, we thoroughly discuss the client’s V (Value, here referring to future business plans, economic goals, and community contribution), and then develop the C (Concept) and D (Design) to realize it. We also assist in making the project known to people around the world.
The upper floor of the gallery is the client’s residence. I propose a life of ‘playing with light’ in a triangular living room corridor, composed solely of indirect lighting reflected by a multifaceted ceiling, incorporating the philosophy of light I learned in Scandinavia.
