地域を見守り、住み続けるためリノベーションされた雑貨店兼住宅

東京都調布市にある大正時代創業100余年のちょうちんや川口商店。
調布の鎮守である布多天神社があるエリアで創業し、初代店主は提灯・傘張の職人として調布で商いをはじめ、提灯のほかにむしろ、荒縄、たわし、ほうきなどの日常雑貨を販売する荒物屋である。
最近ではあまり見かけなくなった荒物屋だが、量販店と違って、当たり前の暮らしの道具が並び、日常的に使いやすく、暮らしにちょうどよいものが揃う。

商店を営みながら家族で住んでいた築30年の店舗併用住宅である。子供の成長や時代の変化で、1階店舗・2階事務所として使われてきたが、2階事務所はしばらく空きテナントとなっていた。
建物の劣化、作業効率の改善、1、2階の使い方などの問題を解決するために建替を含めた建築計画を行うこととなったが、工事期間中の休業期間が長くなることが特に大きな問題となった。
「長年商売をしてきたこの場所で、子育てをして店を守りたい」という娘の思いと、工期短縮・コスト削減の観点から、1階：店舗、2階：娘夫婦の住宅として、職住一体型の店舗併用住宅へとリノベーションしたものである。

毎朝夕、近隣さんとの「おはよう」「いってらっしゃい」「おかえり」の挨拶が日課で、地域で子供たちを見守っている。自分が見守られて育ったように地域を見守る店舗づくりを目指していきたい。100年以上続く店舗の歴史を次世代に「継承」するというキーワードをもとに改修計画が始まった。

竣工当時の図面・書類がなかったため役所協議を行ったうえで改修計画を行った。
既存躯体には大きな劣化はなかったが、経年劣化による建物の傾きが生じていたため、既存柱にサポート柱を抱かせてレベル調整を行い、ブレースで剛性を高める計画とした。
建替えと比べ、工事期間の短縮（約3カ月）と、工事費の大幅な削減が可能となった。

荒物は職人の手が生み出す日用の道具であり、まっとうな暮らしを営むなかで長い年月をかけて培われてきた手工業製品である。
使い捨てではなく、手に馴染んだ愛着のある道具と思い出の家で、ともに経年変化を楽しめる職住一体の家を再創出することができた。（星野晃範）

A general store and house renovated to watch over the area and continue living

”Chochinya Kawaguchi Shouten” was established in Chofu City, Tokyo, more than 100 years ago during the Taisho Era.
Kawaguchi Shoten was founded in the area where Fuda Tenjinsha, the town shrine of Chofu, is located. The first owner started his business in Chofu as a craftsman of lanterns and umbrella stretchers, and in addition to lanterns, the store sells Aramono (everyday sundries) such as straw ropes and brooms.
Unlike mass merchandisers, the shop offers a variety of everyday items that are easy to use and just right for daily life.

It is a 30-year-old house with a storefront that was lived in by the family while running the store. As the children grew up and times changed, the first floor was used as a store and the second floor as an office, but the second-floor office had been vacant for some time.
In order to solve the problems of building deterioration, improvement of work efficiency, and the use of the first and second floors, a building plan including reconstruction was to be undertaken. Still, the long period of absence during the construction period was a particularly big problem.
The renovation was undertaken to convert the building into a combined work/residence/storehouse, with the first floor as the store and the second floor as the daughter and her husband’s residence, in order to shorten the construction period and reduce costs, as well as to accommodate the daughter’s desire to “raise her children and keep the store in this place where we have been doing business for many years.

Every morning and evening, she greets her neighbors with “Good morning” and “Welcome home” and watches over her children in the community. The renovation project began with the keyword of “passing on” to the next generation the store’s history, which has continued for over 100 years.

Since there were no drawings or documents available at the time of completion, we consulted with the municipal office before planning the renovation.
There was no major deterioration in the existing frame. Still, the building was leaning due to age-related deterioration. The plan called for support columns to be placed over the existing columns to adjust the level and bracing to increase rigidity.
Compared to rebuilding, the construction period was shortened (approximately three months), and construction costs were significantly reduced.

Aramono (everyday sundries) are daily tools produced by artisans’ hands and are handicrafts cultivated over many years during real life.
The project was able to re-create a house that is not disposable but rather a combination of work and residence, where both the tools that have become familiar to the hands and the memories of the house can be enjoyed as they age. (Akinori Hoshino)
