創業120年を迎える総合建設会社の次なる100年を目指す拠点としての新社屋計画。
新社屋の構築にあたり、「企業らしさの体現」と「理想的な働き方」をテーマに全社員を対象としたワークショップを開催。「『知』がめぐる場」をコンセプトとして策定し計画を進めた。
敷地は車通りの多い2本の道路に面している。建物をセットバックさせることで歩行者や街並みへの圧迫感を軽減させ、緩やかな曲面をもつ外壁が十字路に対して馴染んでいく。また、外壁材の縦ハゼ葺きの連なりが、自社の事業で用いるシートパイルのような連続性をもった、企業を特徴するファサードを生み出すよう計画した。曲面のボリュームを持ち上げ生まれたピロティによって、抜けの良いグランドレベルをつくり、その先には社員が集う中庭や外部と一体利用できる食堂が繋がることで、地域に開かれた企業体であることを象徴する構成となっている。
中庭をはじめ、会議室や食堂など社外との接点が多い1階は、自社事業である土木基礎地業に関連付けた土色の左官材や、一般流通材である角材、石を積み上げたガビオンを用い、企業アイデンティティの体現を目指した。
一方、2階の執務エリアは、中庭を中心とした放射状の平面とし、中心側にパントリーやミーティングスペースを設けた一体の空間とすることで、社員同士のコミュニケーションが生まれやすい「知がめぐる場」を目指した。構造体である門型フレームが連続する空間は造船ドックを連想させ、創業当初に造船業を営んでいた企業のDNAが未来へ引き継がれてゆく姿を目指した。
事務所建築においては、通常、組織の変化に対応しやすいアノニマスな一室空間が求められるが、今回の計画では、企業文化や組織のあり方を再定義し設計に反映させた。これにより、顕在化している機能要求に留まらず、本質的に必要とされる働き方に合わせた「場」を実現できると考え、実践を行った。（田村潤一郎、上島直樹）
An office building that spatializes the corporate culture and organizational structure
A general construction company celebrating 120 years in business plans a new company building as a base for the next 100 years.
In building the new building, a workshop was held for all employees under the themes of “embodiment of corporate identity” and “ideal work style. The concept of “a place where ‘knowledge’ revolves around” was formulated, and the planning proceeded.
The site faces two busy roads. The building is set back to reduce the sense of oppression to pedestrians and the streetscape, and the gently curved exterior walls blend in with the cross streets. The exterior walls are made of a series of vertical gable roofs designed to create a continuous façade that resembles the sheet piles used in the company’s business and gives the building a distinctive corporate identity. The pilotis, which was created by lifting the curved volume, creates a ground level with good ventilation, which is connected to a courtyard where employees gather and a cafeteria that can be used as one with the outside, symbolizing the corporate entity’s openness to the community.
The first floor, which has many points of contact with the outside world, including the courtyard, conference rooms, and cafeteria, is designed to embody the corporate identity by using earth-toned plastering materials related to the company’s civil engineering foundation business and gabions made of piled up square timbers and stones, which are commonly distributed materials.
On the other hand, the office area on the second floor is a radial plan centered on the courtyard, with a pantry and meeting space on the central side to create a unified space, aiming to create a “place where knowledge revolves” that facilitates communication among employees. The continuous gantry frame of the structure is reminiscent of a shipbuilding dock, and the DNA of the company, which was engaged in shipbuilding when it was first established, was intended to be carried on into the future.
Normally, office architecture calls for a single room space that is anonymous and easily adaptable to organizational changes, but for this project, we redefined the corporate culture and organizational structure and reflected them in the design. This was put into practice because it would enable the realization of a “place” not limited to the apparent functional requirements but tailored to the way of working that is essentially needed.
