1924年、義務教育免除地の悲願の学校として生まれた大赤沢小学校が、2021年に廃校となった。その歴史を引き継ぎ、生まれ変わった「アケヤマ」は、秋山の語源でもあり、山の共有地を意味する「明山（あけやま）」から命名。「人間の生活の力をふたたび手に入れるための学校」として、住民、研究者、アーティストなどさまざまな人たちと「共有地」の技術や信仰を学び実践する取り組みを行っている。
この「アケヤマ」がこれからも、訪れた人々にとっての動き続ける学びの場となるために、旧小学校2階の体育館を使った活動拠点を設えた。体育館の中央の床を剥がして凹地をつくり、この場所にやってくるさまざまなヒトやモノが留まるための”空け地”（＝明け地＝コモンスペース）を据えている。その凹んだ空け地を囲むかたちで、各作家の仮設的な制作ブースが展開している。施工は津南町の山田建設さんに担当してもらった。多雪地域の流通材である120×30mmの間柱材を多用して組み立て、改変や増築も容易なものとしている。季節が回り、訪れるたびに状況がどんどん変わっていくような、常に発見と更新のある動的な場となっていくことを目指している。（佐藤研吾）
A place to learn mountain living skills, created by revitalizing an abandoned school
Oakasawa Elementary School, born in 1924 as a long-desired school in an area exempted from compulsory education, was closed in 2021. Taking over its history, the reborn “Akeyama” was named after “Akeyama,” which is also the origin of the word “Akiyama” and means mountain common land. As a “school for re-gaining the power of human life,” the school works with residents, researchers, artists, and others to learn and practice the techniques and beliefs of the “common land.
For “Akeyama” to continue to be a place of learning for visitors, a base of activities was established in the gymnasium on the second floor of the former elementary school. The floor in the center of the gymnasium was stripped to create a concave space where various people and things that come to this place can stay. Surrounding the concave space are temporary production booths of various artists. Tsunan Town’s Yamada Construction handled construction. The construction was done by Yamada Construction of Tsunan Town, using 120 x 30 mm lumber, a common material used in areas with heavy snowfall. The aim is to create a dynamic place of constant discovery and renewal, where the seasons turn, and the situation changes rapidly with each visit. (Kengo Sato)
