築40年の集合住宅の改修プロジェクト。クライアントは夫婦＋子供2人。
改修におけるプランニング、かたちの組み立ての方法として、圧縮をテーマとして考えた。従来の集合住宅で用いられる空間、構成要素のある部分を圧縮することで、限られた住戸の中に広がりや多様さを見出すことを目指した。
クライアントからの要望を整理していくと、在宅時間の異なる家族が、一体的に互いの生活が感じられる住まいが求められた。また、子供が成長していく過程を考慮し、間仕切りの追加、収納や家具を付け足すことができる拡張性も必要だと考えた。
一般的な集合住宅は、玄関から廊下にいくつかの部屋がぶら下がるように間取りがつくられている。既存の住戸も玄関から廊下を通ると、左右に互いの部屋が独立するように並べられ、採光がとれる環境の良い南側に家族が集うリビングが配置されていた。個室が廊下を中心に配置されている空間構成では、独立性の高い部屋は確保できても、家全体の一体感は感じられにくい。また、家の中に手前と奥の空間ができ、手前には移動のためにしか機能しない廊下が生まれてしまう。
この改修では、意味が限定された場所やかたちを圧縮し、多義的な空間を割り当てていくことで、一体感がありつつ、多様な使い方ができる場所を住戸の中にちりばめた。
まず、各室の広さを最大限確保するため、廊下と部屋の関係を再定義した。仮設的に設えた部屋を住戸の中央に圧縮して並べ、各部屋を貫通するように廊下を配置することで、生活の場となる部屋の有効面積を最大化させた。ここでの廊下は、多義的な存在として、住戸を回遊できる動線であり、部屋の一部でもある。
間仕切りは一般的なLGSの両面に石膏ボードを貼る壁構成ではなく、垂木30×40mm材の片面に10.5mmのOSBボードを貼ることで、壁厚を圧縮し、部屋の有効面積を極限まで増やしている。垂木の骨組みを張り巡らせた舞台装置のような壁は、表裏で性格が異なり、表面は既存コンクリート躯体と連続するグレー色の仕上、裏面は棚などを追加設置できる下地を露出させた。高さ1,820mmの壁には、家具用の小さなコンセントやスイッチを使用し、什器のようなスケールになじませている。
圧縮された住居が、この家族ならではの新しい暮らしのかたちを引き出し、一体感と多様性にあふれる豊かな生活をもたらしてくれることを期待している。（後藤充裕）
A residential renovation that redefines the connection between corridors and rooms with a focus on “compression”
A renovation project for a 40-year-old apartment building. The clients are a couple with two children.
In planning the renovation, we focused on the theme of compression as a method of structuring the design. By compressing certain parts of the space and structural elements commonly found in traditional apartment buildings, we aimed to create a sense of spaciousness and diversity within the limited living space.
After organizing the clients’ requests, we determined that they wanted a home where family members with different schedules could feel connected to each other’s lives. Additionally, considering the children’s growth, we deemed it necessary to incorporate expandability, such as the ability to add partitions, storage, and furniture.
Typical apartment buildings are designed with several rooms branching off from the entrance hallway. In the existing unit, the rooms were arranged independently on either side of the hallway, with the family gathering space—a well-lit living room on the south side—located at the end of the hallway. In a spatial composition where individual rooms are arranged around the hallway, while independent rooms can be ensured, it isn’t easy to feel a sense of unity throughout the house. Additionally, a front and back space are created within the home, resulting in a hallway that serves only as a passageway.
In this renovation, by compressing spaces and forms with limited meanings and assigning multifunctional spaces, we created a scattered layout that offers a sense of unity while allowing diverse uses throughout the residence.
First, to maximize the size of each room, the relationship between the hallway and the rooms was redefined. Temporary rooms were compressed and arranged in the center of the residence, and hallways were positioned to run through each room, thereby maximizing the effective floor area of the living spaces. Here, the hallway serves as a multifunctional element, functioning both as a circulation route that allows movement throughout the residence and as an extension of the rooms themselves.
Instead of the conventional wall construction using gypsum board on both sides of LGS, the walls are constructed by attaching a 10.5mm OSB board to one side of 30×40mm rafters, compressing the wall thickness and maximizing the effective area of the rooms. The walls, resembling a stage set with a grid of joists, have different characteristics on each side: the front side features a gray finish that continues from the existing concrete structure. In contrast, the back side exposes the substrate, allowing for the addition of shelves or other fixtures. The walls, standing at 1,820mm in height, incorporate small outlets and switches for furniture, blending seamlessly into the scale of the furnishings.
This compressed living space will foster a new lifestyle unique to this family, bringing about a rich life filled with unity and diversity. (Mitsuhiro Gotoh)
