福岡市中央区の飲食店。周囲を中高層の建物に囲まれた都市部の乱雑な環境に対し、建築によって非日常的で周囲から遊離した空間をつくり出すため、黒い矩形のボックスで閉じられた空間の中に楕円型の中庭を配置した形態とした。楕円の形態はスーパー楕円（n=2.5）を用いることで、周囲の回廊のどの地点においても角を感じないやわらかい曲率へ調整している。
また、旧家に残された空間や物質の記憶を継承するため、素材を生け捕りし、新たな建築の部材として転用している。以前土地に存在していた旧家のボリュームを残すことによる”空間の記憶”、欄間や建具・瓦といった”物質の記憶”、邸宅の門扉や擁壁に使われていた間知石・梅の木などの庭木を利活用することで”地域と繋がる記憶”を継承している。土地および地域のコンテクストを尊重しながら選択的転用を行うことで、新しい価値を生み出すことが重要であると考えた。このようにいくつもの時間差が並置されることの意味は、複数のエレメントの同時併存を許容する論理であり、デザインの前提条件に”時間”のパラメーターを加える作業とも言える。
構造は木造＋一部鉄骨造であり、外周に木造耐力壁を配し建物中央部に設けた中庭に面して鉄骨ポスト柱＋鉄骨リング梁により軽い木造屋根を軽やかに支持する構成である。勾配を変化させながら中庭に向かって下る屋根は、来訪者を奥に誘引するとともに視線を低い方向へ誘導し、周囲の雑多な風景を遮蔽するフィルターとしての役割を果たす。また、内部には志向の異なる2店舗（膳／白金小径）が並び、旧家の門扉を〈膳〉のエントランスに再利用し、歴史を感じられながらも中に入ると現代的な設えとの対比を演出する。一方、〈白金小径〉のエントランスは、外部に向かって広がりのある平面形で人々を迎え入れ、銅板による艶やかさを演出する。1歩中に踏み入れると、正面の桜を中心とした中庭が、都市の雑踏とは異なった静寂の別世界を演出する。

A restaurant like a miniature garden surrounding a cherry tree
A restaurant in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City. To create an extraordinary, detached space within the chaotic urban environment, the design features an elliptical courtyard enclosed within a black rectangular box. The elliptical form employs a super-ellipse (n=2.5), adjusting the curvature to be soft and free of sharp corners, ensuring no point along the surrounding corridor feels angular.
Furthermore, to inherit the spatial and material memories of the former residence, existing materials were captured and repurposed as components of the new architecture. This preserves the “memory of space” by retaining the volume of the former house that once occupied the site, the “memory of materials” through elements like transoms, fittings, and tiles, and the “memory connecting to the region” by utilizing materials such as the interlocking stones from the residence’s gate and retaining wall, along with garden trees like the plum tree. We considered it crucial to create new value through selective reuse while respecting the land and regional context. The significance of juxtaposing multiple temporal layers lies in a logic that allows the simultaneous coexistence of various elements; it can also be seen as adding the parameter of “time” to the design’s preconditions.
The structure combines timber with partial steel framing. Timber load-bearing walls line the perimeter, while steel post columns and steel ring beams lightly support a timber roof facing the central courtyard. The roof slopes downward toward the courtyard, varying its gradient. This guides visitors deeper into the space, directs their gaze downward, and acts as a filter, screening out the surrounding diverse landscape. Inside, two distinct shops (Zen / Shirogane Koji) sit side by side. The entrance to Zen reuses the gate from the former residence, evoking history while contrasting with the modern interior design upon entry. Meanwhile, Shirokane Koji’s entrance welcomes people with an outward-expanding plan form, enhanced by the lustrous finish of copper plates. Stepping inside, the central courtyard, dominated by a cherry tree, creates a tranquil world distinct from the urban bustle.
