区画整理という行政主導の操作の後、誰もが通り過ぎる間口4mの敷地が残された。大都市圏ではなく、ここは地方都市である。その細さは諦めの理由ではなく、思考を研ぎ澄ますための条件だった。
18坪ほどの土地に、家族が住まい、小さな仕事場を抱えながら日常を営む。建物の間口は一間半。通路は居場所となり、空間は生活に編み込まれていく。床面積確保のためには縦に重ねて高層化するのが定石かもしれないが、周囲の住宅にも合わせた木造2階建ての中でどう暮らしの自由度を最大化するかを考えた。
制度が生んだ小さな敷地に、生活と仕事、家族の時間を重ねるための建築。イッケンハンハウスは、制限を可能性へと転換する、1つの静かな応答である。

A residence that transforms narrow frontage into potential
Following a government-led land readjustment project, a narrow 4-meter-wide lot remained—one that everyone passes by. This is not a central metropolitan area, but a regional city. Its narrowness was not a reason to give up, but rather a condition that sharpened our thinking.
On this roughly 18-tsubo plot, a family lives, maintains a small workshop, and carries out their daily lives. The building’s frontage is 1.5 ken. The passageway becomes a place to be, and the space weaves itself into daily life. While stacking vertically to maximize floor area might be the standard approach, we considered how to maximize the freedom of living within a two-story wooden structure that harmonizes with the surrounding houses.
Architecture designed to layer life, work, and family time onto the small plot born of regulation. The Ikkkenhan House is one quiet response, transforming limitation into possibility.
