2030年の島根国体に向け、人口約4000人の美郷町において、中高生が部活動にも利用する、バリ様式を取り入れたカヌー競技施設を建設する風変わりなプロポーザルが行われた。町を横断する江の川は、谷間の地形を活かして国際大会を開催できる条件を備えており、カヌー活動が盛んな地域である。約30年前にバリ島のマス村へ依頼して木彫りのカヌー「ジュクン」を製作したことをきっかけに友好協定を結んでいる。
バリの生活哲学に人々、自然、神様が調和することにより、皆が幸せに暮らせるといった「トリ・ヒタ・カラナ」という考えがある。これを実践するために、バリ島で伝統建築や素材の調査を行い、地域の自然と呼応しながら遠く離れたバリの建築様式や文化・哲学を解釈して取り入れた、地場産の木材を多用した唯一無二の公共建築となっている。
日本語には古美る（ふるびる）という言葉がある。時の経過とともに、美しくなるという意味だ。自然素材でつくられた建物はまさに古美る建物となり、自然・人々・建築が時間と共に調和する。川や山並みに呼応する緩やかな弧を描く「ジュクン」をモチーフとした大屋根は、雨が降ると、屋根材のアコヤが水を含み全く違った表情を見せ、まるで成長する生き物のように季節や日々の移ろいとともに表情を変える。地域の自然とバリの文化が組み合わさった唯一無二の空間となっている。完成から1年足らずで、カヌー競技の用途だけでなく、産業祭やバリフェスティバルの会場としても活用され、昨年夏にはインターハイが開催されるなど、競技場施設としての役割に加え、観光資源・文化交流拠点として新たな価値を生み出している。

A canoeing facility incorporating the culture of Bali
Reflect Misato’s rich history in canoeing. Home to a population of approximately 4,000, the town boasts a thriving canoe culture, with some of the nation’s most competitive teams. The Gono River, with its valley landscape, meets the criteria for hosting international canoeing events.
Misato Town’s connection to Bali dates back approximately 30 years, when it commissioned the crafting of a traditional wooden canoe, known as a jukung, from artisans in Mas Village, Bali. This exchange laid the foundation for a formal friendship agreement—making Misato the only municipality in Japan with such a partnership with a Balinese counterpart.
Rather than simply adopting Balinese architectural aesthetics, the proposed design incorporates fundamental principles of Balinese life and boat craftsmanship. In Indonesia—an archipelago comprising over 13,000 islands—the jukung serves as both a vital vessel for fishing and transportation and a symbolic medium for ferrying ancestral spirits. This cultural significance extends to traditional Balinese homes, where roofs often embody the form of boats to symbolize spiritual connection.
Drawing inspiration from these traditions, the new boathouse features an elongated roof with extended corners, mirroring the shape of an upturned jukung. During twilight, when the wind subsides and the river’s surface becomes still, the building’s reflection merges seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, creating the striking illusion of a jukung floating gently upon the water.
