This home for a couple and their child is located in a quiet residential neighborhood developed in the Tama Hills in the 1960s. The corner lot faces a steep slope and retains a height difference of approximately 2 meters—a remnant of the hillside’s original topography. We felt that conventional site preparation, which involves leveling such undulations, would sever the terrain’s unique charm from daily life, so we decided to incorporate the memory of the terrain into the design.
First, following the style of the surrounding buildings, we positioned a rectangular volume of similar scale, creating a garden that blends seamlessly with the streetscape. Instead of retaining walls, we designed a two-tiered concrete foundation that also serves as a retaining structure, adapted to the existing ground level, with a wooden frame resting atop it. Furthermore, by segmenting the floor finishes, we created a single, continuous space that flows in terraced levels. The resulting differences in level not only gently divide lines of sight and zones but also serve as physical anchors where one can sit or lean back.
The perimeter walls were kept at a uniform height to blend into the landscape, while the interior walls were aligned with the floor levels. The area below the structural framework follows the natural topography, while the upper section transitions to a wooden structure based on a 1.5-ken module, superimposing two distinct spatial orders. Furthermore, 390mm-wide columns installed at both ends of the south side allow for openings spanning the full width of the building, opening to the garden. With openings on all four sides, the space feels open and airy, allowing light and breeze to be felt from anywhere within.
The gradual changes in the continuous floor create a connection with the environment, aiming to link the accumulated time of the terrain to everyday life.
