As a new hub of urban vitality connecting Takatsuki City’s historic shrine with a new arts and culture theater, 〈Cafe N+〉 aimed to create a building that harmonizes with the existing landscape while maintaining its own distinct character.

The site is located within the shrine grounds, and the café’s façade faces the boundary line adjacent to the theater.
Although this adjacent boundary area had been designated as a planting strip in the theater’s construction plans, through discussions with city officials, we were able to convert the planting strip into an open space, thereby creating a plaza that can be used in unison with the café.

To avoid affecting areas of the shrine’s existing buildings that are at risk of fire spreading, the total floor area of the structure had to be kept within 500 m² (Building Standards Act, Article 2, Item 6), which inevitably limited the café’s floor area to 18 m² or less.
In pursuit of a space that feels expansive despite its small size, the design was finalized as follows: the rear wall facing the existing shrine office was constructed of reinforced concrete to bear seismic forces, and a light wooden roof was supported by this wall and four wooden columns designed to bear only vertical loads.

This design, which combines concrete and wood, also serves to bridge the architectural contexts of both the shrine and the theater.

By positioning the roof beneath the eaves of the existing shrine office, the structure appears to flow seamlessly from the hip-and-gable roof behind it; furthermore, the symmetrical façade, which emphasizes horizontal lines, echoes the shape of a torii gate.
The black mortar used for the interior floors and walls was chosen to match the texture of the black plaster on the existing building’s exterior walls, serving as one of the elements connecting the old and new structures. Solid chestnut wood was used for the door handles and furniture—the first and last things visitors touch—to create a space that is both comfortable and leaves a warm, tactile impression.

The band-like protrusions running along the perimeter—which can be used as counters or benches—give the building a sense of floating, and this sensation serves to seamlessly connect the urban context from the old to the new, as if flowing through it.

We hope that this small building will not only blend into the existing landscape but also be cherished by people for a long time to come as the centerpiece of a new street corner space that bridges the past and the present.
