(English below)

A schoolchild facility that supports activities with beam-shaped "guides" and multifunctional "slides"

Motomachi-Chukagai Station, the last stop on the Minatomirai Line. This is the interior design of a daycare facility for children in a building directly connected to the station (Japan’s first building-type park with an extension above the station building).
The client, Sanwa Foundation of Tokuikukai, initially operated a nursery school and a daycare facility on the same floor. It was a start.

School-age children’s care is only available from elementary school to the end of the parents’ workday. Despite the large space, it is not effectively used on weekdays from around 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. the next day, and on weekends and holidays.
Besides, the number of children temporarily increases as the surrounding apartments are being developed. Still, after a few years, the number of children in the upper grades start to go to cram schools or graduate, and the number of children can easily change, and space needed changes.
I proposed a “changing interior” to open these childcare facilities to the local community actively, and at the same time to use them as a base of interaction and information transmission.

Space can be expanded and contracted to accommodate various activities using an auxiliary frame that forms a “guide” for the area and “slides,” which are two-point hanging fixtures with multiple functions.
The slide, which moves along the guide, is made of various finishes such as a whiteboard, blackboard, exhibition wall, and mirror, and can be fixed by meshing and French-flattening with a small piece of actual work. The number of slides can be increased, and new drops can be added as needed as the facility is operated.

The guides, which use the shelves as a foothold, are made up of a combination of Kamoi, which serve as rails for the slides, and flint beams, which serve as lighting, and are sandwiched between thin plywood on both sides, using pillars and other materials as the core material for transportation, construction time, and cost.
In tenant compartments with no access routes or windows for extended members, we achieved a span of about 7m by combining small, easy-to-handle members with simple hardware and screw connections and gained a strength that does not falter even when the slide is suspended. It also works like an H-shaped steel flange to prevent deflection, and flint beams at the four corners deter lateral swaying and buckling.
The recess at the top of the guide also serves as a wiring route to the lighting rails and other equipment provided at the top of the flint beam side.

In this way, the guide is thin and tall, and together with the cornered flint beam, it creates a sense of spatial unit and a sense of place. In an interior design where the walls and ceilings need to be noncombustible, it achieves a dignified appearance with the soft impression of wood and structural tension.
