〈SEA SPICA〉は瀬戸内海エリアの観光振興のため、我々が内装デザインを担当した観光型高速船である。
瀬戸内海エリアは「多島美」と呼ばれる世界有数の景観を有するが、現状は魅力的な観光コンテンツと周遊ルートが未整備なため、国内外の観光客の訪問先が特定の地域に偏って集中している。そこで、この課題解決と地域活性化を目指して、JR西日本、瀬戸内海汽船、国土交通省中国運輸局の3者で瀬戸内エリアの海事観光の振興に向けた連携協定を結び、観光コンテンツ開発や、MaaS（Mobility-as-a-Service）導入の実証実験、地産品の発掘発信など新しい取り組みを始めた。
本船導入はこの取り組みの目玉で、これまで日本にほぼ前例がない、国内外からの瀬戸内の島嶼部観光を主眼にした設備と性能を備えた高速クルーザーであるとともに、広島港と三原港を東西に結ぶ新しい観光航路を開設し、JR新型観光列車やアクセスバス、サイクリングと連携することで、新たな周遊ルートを創出している。加えて、地域自治体や観光事業者と連携した着地の観光開発も用意し、従来にない新しい瀬戸内を提案する。
本船の乗客にとって一番大事な価値は、瀬戸内海の景色だ。ただし、島嶼部の中小の港にも寄港できる全長の制約、高速性能ゆえの重量制限、定員約90名が採算上の条件とされたことから、平面プランは断面3-4-3の配列になり、中央部の座席からは景色を望むことが難しくなる。そこで、窓側席の背もたれを大幅に低くし、かつ向きを3度ほど窓側に振ることで、船体中央部からも景色をかなり感じられるように工夫した。
揺れが少なく観光に適した双胴船とし、高速航行中でも自由に船内を歩き回れるため、より視界が広がる。また、軽量化のためリクライニング機構を排したソファ席を開発。限られた船内ながらさまざまなお客様に対応するため、グループ向け座席やボックス座席、ソファや案内カウンター、前方眺望・多言語案内用スクリーンを具備。2階へは車椅子対応のバリアフリー設備を備え、半屋外の暴露デッキにもさまざまなベンチを配し、スピード感あふれる景色を楽しめる。（川西康之＋興津みなみ）
High-speed ship interior with a view of the beauty of the islands of Setouchi
“SEA SPICA” is a sightseeing-type high-speed boat that we designed to promote tourism in the Seto Inland Sea area.
The Seto Inland Sea area has one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, known as the “beauty of the many islands.” Still, due to the current lack of attractive tourism content and travel routes, domestic and international tourists are unevenly concentrated in certain areas. Therefore, to solve this problem and revitalize the region, JR West, Seto Inland Sea Kisen, and the Chugoku District Transport Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism have signed a partnership agreement to promote maritime tourism in the Setouchi area. They then began new initiatives such as developing tourism content, conducting demonstration experiments to introduce Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) and discovering and disseminating local products.
The introduction of this vessel is the centerpiece of this initiative. It is a high-speed cruiser with equipment and performance almost unprecedented in Japan and is mainly designed for tourism to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea from Japan and abroad. In addition, a new tourist route will be established connecting Hiroshima Port and Mihara Port from east to west, and a new circular route will be created by linking it with the new JR sightseeing train, access bus, and cycling. In addition, we will offer a new Setouchi area that has never been seen before by developing tourism at the destination in cooperation with local governments and tourism businesses.
The most important value for the passengers of this ship is the view of the Seto Inland Sea. However, due to the restrictions on the length of the ship, which allows it to call at small and medium-sized ports on islands, the weight limit due to its high-speed performance, and the fact that the ship’s capacity of about 90 passengers is a requirement for profitability, the plan is a 3-4-3 cross-sectional arrangement, making it difficult to see the scenery from the center seats. To solve this problem, we lowered the backrests of the window seats significantly, and the direction of the seats was swung to the window side by about 3 degrees to secure a view from the center of the hull.
The catamaran is designed to be less bumpy and more suitable for sightseeing. It allows passengers to walk around the ship freely while sailing at high speed, thus increasing their visibility. To reduce weight, a sofa seat without a reclining mechanism has been developed. The ship is equipped with group seating, box seating, sofas, information counters, forward views, and multilingual information screens to accommodate various passengers despite the limited space on board. The ship is also equipped with barrier-free facilities that allow wheelchair access to the second floor and various benches on the semi-outdoor exposure deck to enjoy the speedy scenery.
