宮崎県宮崎市の改修住宅。
父親（亡父）が建築した家の記憶としての和室を残したいという要望と、今の自分たちの生活にフィットさせたいという一見相反する希望とともに、趣味のキャンプ用品などを用いて、友人を招いて過ごす外部を含んだ過ごし方やライフスタイルを望まれていた。加えて、現在のリビングダイニングの仄暗さの改善も望まれていた。
続き間の南西側の和室を土間空間として通常のレベルから1段下げることで溜まりをつくり、滞在する場所として設えることに加えて、隣接する本格的な和室をアートのようなショーケースに見立て空間に参加させた。部屋として独立させてしまうと使わない（見えない）場所になるため、常に見える位置にあることでの建築のあり方を考えた。部屋同士の仕切りを取り払い広いワンルーム空間とし、外まで繋がるような空間・居場所づくりを行った。
中心の階段の登り位置を反転させて角度を約11度振ることで、静的な整然とした空間に動きを付けて場所の濃度を変化させた。また外観はほとんど手を加えずに、外構（庭）では元の駐車場の位置と和風庭の位置を反転、内部空間に対応させてデッキをリビングの延長線上に設けている。
天井杉のリブパネルが、改修によって出てくる古い材料や生々しい素材などと新しい要素（左官壁・広葉樹フローリング・シンプルな白い壁など）を調停させてくれるのではないかと考えて素材選定をしている。施主とともにつくり上げた住宅である。（山田伸彦）
A house with an existing Japanese-style room as a showcase for living
This is a renovated house in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture.
The client wanted to preserve the Japanese-style room as a memory of the house built by his father (his late father) and also wanted to fit it into their current lifestyle, a seemingly contradictory desire, as well as a lifestyle that includes an outside space to spend time with friends using camping equipment for their hobby. In addition, they wanted to improve the darkness of the current living/dining room.
The Japanese-style room on the southwest side of the continuation room was lowered one level from the ground level to create a gathering spot as an earthen floor space, and was set up as a place to stay. The room was designed to be always visible to the viewer, as it would be an unused (invisible) place if it were made to stand alone. The partitions between the rooms were removed to create a large one-room space that is connected to the outside.
By reversing the climbing position of the central staircase and swinging the angle about 11 degrees, we added movement to the static, orderly space and changed its density. In addition, the exterior of the house was barely modified, but the exterior (garden) reversed the position of the original parking lot, and the Japanese-style garden and the deck were made an extension of the living room, corresponding to the interior space.
Material selection was based on the idea that ribbed ceiling cedar panels would mediate new elements (plastered walls, hardwood flooring, simple white walls, etc.) with old and fresh materials from the recovery process. This is a house we built together with the client. (Nobuhiko Yamada)
