An assembly facility to dedicate lights to the precincts of the temple and connect history and culture to the future
This is a meeting facility in the heart of the old city that preserves the history of Hakata. The site is surrounded by the monotonous development around Tenjin and Hakata Station, and the question of how to capture the history becomes a proposition. It is also a coexistence plan on the north shrine gate of Kushida Shrine, where the private sector owns 3/4 of the building and Kushida Shrine 1/4.
While the plan’s premise is to use up the floor-area ratio of the building, how to express the dignity of the shrine precincts is also a question. The entire structure is a “torch,” and the daily activities of the residents are to offer a torch to the gods and Buddha. We were able to unite the consciousness of the client and the designer in an initial way. Compared to the usual urban landscape, the scenery of the shrine precincts, which changes little, was edited and inherited as modern architecture to create an integrated landscape with the place (space).
In addition, the area around Kushida Shrine used to be the largest industrial district in the city, i.e., a craftsmen’s district. Although it is no longer possible to create architecture with the skills of the local artisans, I called on artisans in the city, the prefecture, and Kyushu who live by their skills and inlaid their creations into modern architecture using modern construction methods. The architecture was created as a work that traces a consistency with the area’s geological history, which is now invisible. (Shozaburo Takaki)
