本計画は山の頂上に位置し、周囲を海と山と空に360°囲われた場所に建つ別荘兼1棟貸しの宿泊施設である。山頂をスパッと切ってできたようなこの敷地でのクライアントの要望は、
・自然と共にあること
・風の音、水の音、木々の音が感じられること
・360°の眺望を満喫できること
・心が癒されること
・家族・ゲストがくつろげること
これらに対して、私たちは”地球を五感で感じるリトリートヴィラ”を提案した。
このヴィラは、真ん中のくびれた敷地に対して”本館””アネックス”の2棟を配し、それらをグランドレベルと2階レベルでそれぞれ”コリドー”でコネクトすることで”∞”の形を想起させる構成となっている。ここを利用する人は雄大な自然の中でこの無限の回廊を無限に回遊しつつ大地と、海と対峙し、そしてその意識は無限の天空へと昇華していく。
山の頂部に位置するここにはかつて山の頂が存在していた。周囲は大地が隆起してできた房総半島ならではのいくつもの山の頂が連なる場所であり、本計画ではそんなかつてここにあった”稜線の記憶”と360°の大自然の中での生活として、”テント”をイメージしたvolumeの計画となっている。これによってできる勾配した屋根は、海や山だけではなく、利用者の意識を天空に向かって発散、昇華していくものとなる。
どこでも見渡せる360°の景色は巨視的なイメージとしては記憶されるが、詳細な記憶としては意外と残らない。この計画では、この大自然をあえて”切り取る”こと、来訪者の視線を”制御する”ことを目的として、あえて壁を配することとした。
1階では敷地へのアプローチの部分から、跳ね出した巨大な壁が来訪者を迎え入れる。この長く、高い壁は来訪者の視線を制御しながら建物の中へと誘う。2階では適宜配された壁が周囲の風景を切り取り、ピクチャレスクで印象的なイメージを与える。
これらによって切り取られた風景は、季節や天気や時間でその表情を無限に変えながら利用者の記憶に印象的に刻まれていく。
計画地の地域では過去、石切が盛んであった。既に閉山してしまっているが、その歴史や遺構は今ものこの地域に残っている。本計画では、配置や性格から建物を8つのゾーンに分け、それらを房総半島の起こりや石切場の記憶からイメージした”鉱物”によって繋いでいくことで一体の建築とすることを目指した。
建物のどこにいても削り出された岩や、石を切ったような空間を感じることで統一感のある空間性を実現した。
ヴォリューム、壁、鉱物によって形成されるこの建物に、よりここに来ることの特別感、非日常への没入のために、”炎””水””緑””大地の遺産”を配した。
暖炉やかがり火による炎の揺らぎ、プールや水盤を叩く水の音や波紋、周囲の山々とは一線を画す植栽の計画に加え、この場所の大地の遺産をイメージした巨石オブジェ、石積み階段、古木オリーブ。これらに時間軸や風や照明が掛け合わさることでさまざまな角度から五感を刺激し、非日常へ没入させていくことで、本建物は来訪者にとって唯一無二のリトリート施設として完成した。

This project is a vacation home and whole-house rental property situated atop a mountain, surrounded by sea, mountains, and sky. On this site, which appears as if the mountaintop were sliced cleanly away, the client’s requests were:
・To be one with nature
・To feel the sounds of wind, water, and trees
・To fully enjoy the 360-degree views
・To provide a healing experience for the mind
・To offer relaxation for family and guests
In response, we proposed a “Retreat Villa where you feel the Earth with all five senses.”
The villa features two buildings—the “Main House” and the “Annex”—positioned around a central indented plot. Connecting them via ‘corridors’ at ground level and second-floor level creates a composition evoking the shape of “∞”. Guests here can traverse this infinite corridor amid the grand nature, confronting the earth and the sea, as their consciousness ascends towards the endless sky.
Located atop a mountain peak where a summit once stood, this site is surrounded by the distinctive ridges of the Boso Peninsula, formed by uplifted land. The design evokes the “memory of the ridgeline” that once existed here, envisioning a “tent”-like volume for living amidst 360° nature. The resulting sloped roof directs the user’s consciousness not only toward the sea and mountains but also upward, dispersing and elevating it toward the sky.
While the 360-degree views are memorable on a macro level, detailed memories of them are surprisingly elusive. This project deliberately incorporates walls to “frame” this vast nature and “control” the visitor’s gaze.
On the first floor, a massive cantilevered wall greets visitors as they approach the site. This long, tall wall guides visitors into the building while controlling their gaze. On the second floor, strategically placed walls frame the surrounding landscape, creating picturesque and memorable views.
These framed vistas, endlessly changing their expression with the seasons, weather, and time of day, become vividly etched into users’ memories.
The site’s region once thrived with stone quarrying. Though the quarries are now closed, their history and remnants remain. This project divides the building into eight zones based on layout and character, aiming to unify them as a single architecture by connecting them through “minerals”—inspired by the origins of the Boso Peninsula and the memory of the quarries.
This achieves a unified spatial quality, allowing occupants to feel as if they are carved into rock and in spaces reminiscent of quarried stone wherever they are in the building.
To enhance the sense of occasion and immersion in the extraordinary, elements representing “Fire,” “Water,” “Green,” and “Earth’s Legacy” are integrated into this structure formed by volume, walls, and minerals.
The flickering flames of fireplaces and bonfires, the sound and ripples of water striking pools and basins, and a planting scheme distinct from the surrounding mountains are complemented by a giant stone sculpture evoking the earth’s legacy of this place, stone-paved stairs, and ancient olive trees. The interplay of time, wind, and lighting stimulates the senses from multiple angles, drawing visitors into this extraordinary immersion. This completes the building as a truly unique retreat facility for its guests.
