島のものと技術でつくり上げた私設図書館
曽祖父の故郷である長崎県の五島列島の歴史や文化に魅せられた東京在住の建主は、福江島の富江に建つ築80年の民家を改修して、友人たちと泊まれるもう1つの拠点にしたいと望んだ。しかし五島列島は東京からはかなり距離があり、1年を通して現地に滞在できるのは数日。そこで普段は島の人たちが集まり活きる場所にと考え、建主とともにこの島を訪れた。
農業、水産業、建設業、そしてデザインなどを生業とする島の人びとをこのプロジェクトのメンバーとして招き、この場所をどのように活用できるか議論を重ねた。メンバーの1人から「この街には大きな本屋も公共図書館もなくなったので、図書館がほしい」という意見が出た。島には山や海などの豊かな自然があり、それを産業とするための働く場所もあるが、公園や図書館などの公共スペースの維持が難しくなっている。同様に空き家が目立ち、戦前に建てられた立派な民家も活用の仕方が分からず無残に解体されている。また高齢化と後継者不足によって島特有の技術や、かつては栄えた産業も少しずつ失われている。
そこで、このプロジェクトでは「島のもの」と「島の技術」で小さな図書館をつくることにした。その土地にあるものの組み合わせ自体をデザインし、新しいものへと更新することで、その土地が培ってきた文化や知恵を継承しながら、新鮮なものに磨き上げる試みだ。（能作淳平）
Private library built with island objects and technology
Fascinated by the history and culture of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture, the hometown of owner’s great-grandfather, he wanted to renovate an 80-year-old house in Tomie on the island of Fukue and turn it into another base where they could stay with friends. However, the Goto Islands are quite far from Tokyo, and they can only stay there for a few days throughout the year. So, I visited the island with the owner, hoping to turn it into a place where the people of the island usually gather and live.
Islanders from agriculture, fishing, construction, and design were invited to be part of the project and discuss how this place could be used. One of the members stated that he would like to have a library because there is no longer a large bookstore or public library in the city. The island has a wealth of nature, including mountains and the sea, and there are places to work to make it an industry, but it has become difficult to maintain public spaces such as parks and libraries. Similarly, vacant houses are conspicuous, and fine pre-war private dwellings are being demolished without knowing how to make use of them. In addition, the aging of the population and lack of successors have caused a gradual loss of the island’s unique technologies and once-thriving industries.
So, in this project, I decided to create a small library with “island things” and “island technology.” It is an attempt to design the combination of things found around the area and update it into something new, passing on the culture and wisdom that the local has cultivated while refining it into something fresh.
