〈MERCURE KYOTO STATION〉は、DESIGN STUDIO CROWが携わるメルキュールブランドとしては、銀座に続いて2棟目となり、京都史上最も華やいだといわれるおよそ1200年前、都（=平安京）の跡地にて計画された。
その昔都では、隆盛を極めた貴族によって数々の「遊び」が生み出された。平安貴族にとって「遊び」は単なる娯楽にとどまらず、各々の品位を高める目的として親しまれ、今を生きる日本文化にも深く根差している。当プロジェクトでは、伝統文化の継承に厳格である一方、常に新しいものを模索し続ける京都の地ならではの 「平安貴族の遊び」をデザインコンセプトに、ストーリーの構築を行うこととした。
まず、計画地が2つのストリートに面することから、油小路通りにはホテルエントランス、堀川通りにはダイニングの顔をそれぞれ設ける配置から行った。
メインロビーでは、折り紙でつくられた「蹴鞠（けまり）」をモチーフにした手漉き和紙のインスタレーションが展開され、正面のデザインウォールは、ガラス作家によりていねいにつくられた吹きガラスの球体で構成し、LED照明で内照させた。色彩豊かなデザインウォールは、旅の始まりの華やかさを象徴しており、吹き抜けを通して地階まで続いている。
地下のラウンジスペースでは、ミーティングやコワーキング、イベントなど、多用途に付加価値を生む環境を設えた。
地元の素材・エッセンスをメニューに取り入れたビストロダイニング「Trattoria M Kyoto」では、ゲストの目を惹くピザオーブンやグリドルをメインとしたライブキッチンのみならず、平安絵巻や百人一首、着物といった、「貴族の遊び」を現代的に解釈したアートを点在させ、独創性溢れる空間を創出した。
隣接するバリスタ＆バーでは、「曲水の宴」をコンセプトに据え、エントランス扉をはじめ、カウンターの版築壁や苔壁など、平安時代に貴族の宴の場となっていた庭園の小川をイメージし、現代における新たな宴の場をデザインした。
ゲストルームにおいては、低層階のスーペリアフロアは「投扇興（とうせんきょう）」、高層階のプリヴィレッジフロアは「独楽（こま）遊び」をアイコンに据え、壁面やカーペット、家具などのアイテム1つひとつに対してクリエイティブな手法で置き換えていき、快適さと遊び心を共存させた。
インバウンド需要で急増していく京都の宿泊施設の中で、土地に根付いた歴史・特性を最大限活かしたこのホテルが、常に進化し続ける京都ならではのクリエイティビティと出会える施設となることを期待している。（藤本泰士）
A hotel space that inherits the play of Heian and has both gorgeousness and creativity
〈MERCURE KYOTO STATION〉 is the second building of the Mercure brand in which DESIGN STUDIO CROW has been involved, following Ginza, and it was planned on the site of the former capital (Heian-Kyo) 1200 years ago, which is said to have been the most prosperous capital in the history of Kyoto.
In ancient times, the aristocracy of the capital created numerous “games.” For the Heian aristocracy, “games” were not just for entertainment but it also to improve their dignity and are deeply affect in the Japanese culture of today. Kyoto city is strict about passing on traditional culture while constantly seeking out new things. In this project, we decided to create a story based on the design concept of “Heian aristocracy’s entertainment,” which links the unique point of Kyoto region.
First of all, since the project site faces two streets, the hotel entrance is located on Aburakoji-Dori and the dining room on Horikawa-Dori.
There is an installation of handmade Japanese paper in the main lobby with the motif of “Kemari” made of origami. The design wall in front of the hotel consists of blown glass spheres carefully made by glass artists and internally illuminated by LED lights. The colorful design wall symbolizes the glamour of the beginning of a journey and continues through the atrium to the basement floor.
The lounge space in the basement is a versatile value-added environment for meetings, co-working, and events.
Trattoria M Kyoto’s of a dining restaurant incorporates the combination menu with local ingredients and essential food’s material. This dining restaurant includes the designed open kitchen with more attractive pizza ovens and grills.
Additionally, this designed dining space is reflected the art that is a modern interpretation of “aristocratic entertainment” such as Heian Emaki, Hyakunin Isshu, and Kimono.
The adjacent barista and bar are based on the concept of “Kyokusui-no-Utage” (banquet in a meandering stream). The entrance door, plate wall, and moss wall of the counter resemble a stream in a garden where aristocrats used to hold banquets in the Heian period.
For the guest rooms, the icons are “Tousenkyo” for the Superior floors on the lower floors and “Top play” for the Privilege floors on the upper floors, and each item such as walls, carpets, and furniture has been replaced in a creative way to create a coexistence of comfort and playfulness.
I hope that this hotel, which makes the most of the history and characteristics of the local area, will become a facility where you can encounter the creativity that is unique to Kyoto, which is constantly evolving, as the number of accommodation facilities in Kyoto increases rapidly due to inbound demand.
