昭和8年から続く老舗の銭湯、小杉湯。〈小杉湯となり〉はその隣で、銭湯のある暮らしを提供する施設である。
銭湯には、「人と話さなくとも、人とつながれる」、会話を前提としない静かなコミュニティがある。
そのコミュニティは、「ある集団に属する」というよりも、人々の営みが織り込まれた「環境に属する」といった感覚である。その環境が小杉湯においては、男湯と女湯にまたがって架かる大きな越屋根によって生まれる「上空」にあり、太陽の光を取り込み、風が抜け、くぐもった湯気が立ち込め、匂いを溶かし、音を響かせている。
室内だが上空があるような、この独特な環境のあり方を展開し、銭湯的なコミュニティを拡張したいと考えた。
3階建ての建物を小さく切り分けるように、階と階の間を半透明な層として、外部環境を取り込む。
直接、あるいは庇に反射して取り込まれた光が、層の中で拡散を繰り返して柔らかさをたくわえ、メッシュの膜を通り室内に落ちてくる。
1階は南側の強い光を庭の紅葉の葉の輪郭とともに天井の膜に写し取り、2階は穏やかな北側の光で満たされている。
膜は見上げる角度によって空が見えたり、湯気のようにくぐもったりしている。
南北の風が半透明な層を通り抜け、熱を奪いながら膜を介して室内の空気を優しく動かす。
音や匂いが、薄い床を通して人の気配をそれとなく伝える。
人びとの暮らしの上には、ゆらぎ、うつろう環境が広がっている。
各階はシンプルなワンルームとし、食事をしたり、畳でくつろいだり、寝室としたりできるが、その地上の様相は時代やニーズが変われば変わっていくだろう。
しかし上空の環境は変わらない。
銭湯には「中普請（なかぶしん）」という仕組みがあり、建物の小屋は変わらずに、浴槽や設備など地上部分だけを時代に合わせて変えていくことで、100 年近く残ってきた。
変わるものと変わらないもの、その2つが同居する場所が銭湯的であると考え、目指した場所である。（樋口耕介、瀧 翠）
A place to share the above environment like the sky where one can practice the sento lifestyle
Kosugiyu is a long-established public bath, sento, that has been around since 1933. Kosugiyu Tonari -tonari means “next to”- is a facility that provides a sento lifestyle. In the sento, there is a quiet community; you don’t have to talk to people, but you can connect with people. Rather than “belonging to a certain group”, it is more like “belonging to the environment,” where people’s activities are woven. In Kosugiyu, such environment is created by the large roof that straddles the men’s and women’s baths. It is like the sky; the sunlight comes in, the wind goes through, the muffled steam floats, the scent melts, and the sound echoes. We expanded this unique environment to Kosugiyu Tonari in order to expand the sento-like community.
The three-story building is divided into small pieces and the external environments are taken in from the translucent layers between the floors. The direct light or the reflected light by the eaves is repeatedly diffused inside the layer to become soft, and then fallen into the room through the mesh membrane. At the first floor, the strong direct light on the south side creates shadows along with the outline of the autumn leaves in the garden to the ceiling membrane, and the second floor is filled with the gentle north light. Depending on the angle you look up, you can see the sky through mesh membrane or muffled like the steam. The north-south wind passes through the translucent layer and gently moves the indoor air through the mesh membrane while taking heat away. The thin floor implicitly conveys the sign of a person through the sound and the smell. A fluctuating and changing environment is spreading above the lives there.
Each floor is one simple room where one can eat, relax on tatami mats, or use it as a bedroom. As the time passes, how it is used will be changed according to the needs. However, the environment spreading above overhead will not change. The sento has a system called nakabushin, which the above-ground such as bathtubs and equipment are changed to meet the times but the building structure does not change. By doing so, it has been remained for nearly 100 years. The one that changes and the one that does not change. The place where the two coexists is the sento-like and that is what we aimed for.
