船内の回遊を促し川との一体感を喚起する水上バス

隅田川を航行、浅草～お台場を繋ぐ水上バスである。本船は『銀河鉄道999』などを手がけた漫画家・松本零士氏による船体デザインのシリーズ3隻目となる。船体同様これまでの船舶にない新しい価値観を内装デザインに求められた我々は、整然と並べられた座席という固定概念を覆すことで応えた。

前方客室の床面が水面の高さに等しいことに気づいた我々は、水辺に足を浸すような川と一体感のある親水空間を思い描いた。そして風景が目まぐるしく変化する水上バスでは乗客の自由な移動を促すほうがワクワクする気持ちを喚起する空間にできると考えた。
そこで前方客室は水流によって緩やかに削られた「川のほとり」を抽象化したような、ベンチやテーブル、カウンターとして使えるコンター状の造作で囲んだ。もはや座席とは呼び難い地形のような場とすることで、見たい景色を追いかけ、好きな姿勢を求め移動したくなるような、乗客に回遊を促す空間を目指した。
足元にはマルチカラー点滅の間接照明を設けた。流れるような光や、波紋のような光、さまざまな動きや色のプログラムを加えることで流れる景色に身を浸しているような親水性を高める演出とした。

入口付近のエリアには船舶の安全規定上、揺れが加わった際の安全のために手摺の設置が必要とされた。我々は船舶業界ではあまり採用例のない掘り込み型の手摺を提案した。造船会社からは不安視する見方があったが、「新しい価値観を」というクライアントの後押しがそれを実現した。掘り込み部分には間接照明を仕込んだ。そのライン状の光は乗船したときのアイキャッチとなり、乗客を光によって客席へと導くシークエンスをつくっている。

本船からは、水面が反射するきらめきや船が橋の下に入ったときの一瞬の暗がりなど、水上の移動空間ならではの光の移ろいが感じられる。そして都会のビル群や水運施設が代わるがわる、ときには混在して現れ、隅田川独特の喜怒哀楽が溢れるような風景が見られる。
こうした周辺環境の目まぐるしい変化は、建築をとりまく日照や季節といったゆるやかな環境変化に目を向けていた我々にとって新鮮であり、創作の源泉となった。
水面から都市を眺めるという非日常体験を、そして特別な風景や居場所を見つける旅をこの船から楽しんでもらえたらと思う。（玉上貴人）

A water bus that encourages migration on board and evokes a sense of unity with the river

It is a water bus that sails along the Sumida River and connects Asakusa to Odaiba. This ship is the third in a series of hull designs by Leiji Matsumoto, the manga artist who created “Galaxy Express 999” and other works. We were asked to create a new hull and a new sense of value not seen in conventional ships for the interior design. We responded by overturning the stereotype of neatly arranged seating.

We noticed that the floor of the forward cabin was equal to the height of the water surface and envisioned a hydrophilic space with a sense of unity with the river as if dipping one’s feet in the water. We also thought it would be better to encourage passengers to move freely on the water bus, as the scenery changes rapidly, to create a space that evokes a sense of excitement.
Therefore, the forward cabin is surrounded by contoured structures that can be used as benches, tables, and counters, as if abstracted from the “banks of the river” gently carved by the water flow. By making the space like a terrain that can no longer be called a seat, I aimed to create a space that encourages passengers to migrate, to follow the scenery they want to see, and to move in search of their favorite posture.
Indirect lighting with multi-colored flashing lights was installed at the feet. By adding flowing light, rippling light, and a variety of movement and color programs, the effect is to increase the sense of intimacy, as if one is immersed in the flowing scenery.
According to the safety regulations of the ship, the area near the entrance needed to be equipped with a handrail for safety in case of tremors. Therefore, we proposed a dug-in handrail, which is rarely used in the shipbuilding industry. The shipbuilders had some concerns about the idea, but the client’s insistence on “new values” made it a reality. In addition, indirect lighting was installed in the recessed area. These light lines serve as an eye-catcher when passengers board the ship, creating a sequence that leads them to their seats.

From the ship, one can feel the shimmering reflections of the water surface and the momentary darkness when the ship goes under the bridge. In addition, urban buildings and water transportation facilities appear alternately, sometimes mixed, creating a scene full of joy, anger, and sorrow unique to the Sumida River.
For those of us who have been working in the field of architecture, where we have seen gradual changes in the environment such as sunshine and seasons, these rapid changes in the surrounding environment were refreshing. This was the source of our creativity.
