築約120年の京町家の2階部分を改装し、バーとスタジオ機能を併せもつ〈bar/studio 祇園舎〉をつくった。
僧侶でありメディアプロデューサーという2つの顔をもつオーナーが運営する。
夜は僧侶たちがバーテンダーとして立つバーで、昼は仏教に関する講話や日本の伝統音楽のライブパフォーマンスの収録や発信を行うスタジオとなる。
町家の通し柱を軸に配した2枚のバーカウンターが、空間にリズムと中心を与える。
緩やかにカーブする土壁が空間を包み込み、ディスプレイのための無垢ヒノキの塊が空間を引き締める。
床、壁、天井は、既存町家室内の上に直接、防音性能の高い材で仕上げている。
天井の一部は掘り上げ、バーとスタジオのための2種類の照明をはじめ撮影用のケーブルやスピーカーを設置するスペースを設けた。
バーのための心身に染み入るような空間と、スタジオのために随所に巡らせた諸設備が並存する建築である。
世界規模での感染症拡大が発生した2020年、文化の継承と発信を同時に行う新しい試みの店としてスタートした。（多田正治、遠藤正二郎）
A renovated townhouse in a bar where you can enjoy monks' lectures and music
The second floor of a 120-year-old townhouse was renovated to create a bar and studio, “GIONSYA.”
Its owner is a Buddhist monk and media producer.
In the evening, the bar is a bartender of monks. It is a studio where Buddhist lectures and live performances of traditional music are recorded and transmitted in the daytime.
The old pillars of the townhouse and the two bar counters give the space rhythm and centrality.
The gently curving clay walls and the mass of solid cypress for the display tighten the space.
Floors, walls, and ceilings are finished with soundproofing materials.
Part of the ceiling is recessed to provide space for two types of lighting, a bar, and a studio, and cables and speakers for shooting.
It is an architecture where the spiritual space for the bar and the network of equipment for the studio coexist.
In 2020, when the spread of infectious diseases occurred on a global scale, it started as a new attempt store to simultaneously inherit and disseminate culture. (Masaharu Tada, Shojiro Endo)
