2軒の長屋を対角線の軸で再構成する。
京都・河原町四条から少し南に下った町家が並ぶ一角。2軒の町家の間に奥へと向かうトンネル路地があり、その先にも家々が並ぶ。そのトンネル路地に面した縦列する2棟の町家をリノベーションし、鍼灸サロンとして再生させた。
縦列する2棟の長屋は、間口が3.5m、奥に21mと極端に細長い形状であった。細長い長屋に耐震壁を配置し、それを避けるように対角線の軸を通し、それに沿って機能を配置した。
道路側を鍼灸のための施術棟とし、トンネル路地を通ってアプローチする奥を瞑想するためのリラクゼーション棟とした。2棟の間は中庭と縁側で繋がっている。
道路側から1.6mセットバックした位置を外壁面とし、街に対して距離を取ると同時に延長した床がベンチになっていて、ちょっとした滞留場所を街に提供している。
手前の施術棟では、町家の古い柱と梁、土壁をかわすように床を斜めに通し、その両側に施術室や待合い、給湯スペースを配置した。対角線の軸に沿って、道路から中庭へと視線が抜けていく空間である。
対して、奥のリラクゼーション棟では瞑想室・水回りを2つの白いボリュームとして配置した。ボリュームの隙間を歩くように巡る空間となっている。
一般的な鍼灸サロンは、いくつかの施術室とそれらを繋ぐ通路という主従の構成でできているが、〈龍ノ穴〉では斜めの軸によってその主従が反転している。また、中庭が室内に入り込み、中の床が外へと延長する建築は、内部と外部の境界が揺らぐような空間体験をもたらす。
反転や揺らぎにより、決して十分な広さでない町家に豊かな風景をつくり出すことができた。

A acupuncture salon where a diagonal axis running through the row house frames a variety of scenes
Two row houses were reconfigured along a diagonal axis.
This project is located in a neighborhood just south of Kawaramachi-Shijo in Kyoto, lined with traditional townhouses. A tunnel-like alleyway runs between two of these townhouses, leading deeper into the neighborhood, where more houses stand in a row. We renovated these two adjacent townhouses facing the alleyway and repurposed them as an acupuncture and moxibustion salon.
The two row houses, arranged in a row, had an extremely narrow and elongated shape, with a frontage of 3.5 meters and a depth of 21 meters. Seismic walls were installed within the narrow row houses, and a diagonal axis was established to avoid these walls, with functions arranged along this axis.
The building facing the street serves as the treatment wing for acupuncture and moxibustion. In contrast, the rear building, accessed via the tunnel-like alley, serves as a relaxation wing for meditation. A courtyard and a veranda connect the two buildings.
The exterior wall is set back 1.6 meters from the street, creating a buffer while extending the floor to form a bench, providing a small gathering spot for passersby.
In the treatment building at the front, the floor runs diagonally to avoid the old pillars, beams, and earthen walls of the traditional townhouse, with treatment rooms, a waiting area, and a hot water supply space arranged on either side. It is a space where the line of sight extends from the street through to the courtyard along the diagonal axis.
In contrast, in the relaxation building at the rear, the meditation room and wet areas are arranged as two white volumes. The space is designed so that one moves through the gaps between these volumes.
While typical acupuncture and moxibustion salons are organized around a hierarchical structure of treatment rooms connected by corridors, at “Ryū no Ana,” this hierarchy is inverted by the diagonal axis. Furthermore, the architecture—where the courtyard extends into the interior and the interior floor extends outward—creates a spatial experience in which the boundary between inside and outside becomes blurred.
Through this inversion and blurring of boundaries, we were able to create a rich landscape within a machiya that is by no means spacious.
