神戸電鉄有馬線は、神戸市中心部から六甲山を越えて有馬温泉を直結する鉄道として昭和初期に開業した。この沿線の山間部には大規模な団地が次々に開発され、阪神工業地帯へ通勤する人口増加を支えるニュータウンとして発展していった。しかし、かつてのニュータウンも人口減少と少子高齢化が顕著なオールドタウンとなり、バイパス道路沿い大型商業施設の隆盛と各駅前商店街の空洞化、クルマ社会の浸透による神戸電鉄有馬線の利用者減少が大きな課題であった。
この状況を受け、私たちは神戸電鉄の関係者とともに、有馬線の未来と沿線のあり方を見つめ直すフィールドワークと議論を重ねた。その成果として、現花山駅と同一敷地内に新駅舎を建設するプロジェクトが始動した。
新駅舎のコンセプトは次の3点である。
・見送り・出迎えが楽しくなる駅
・大切な人と安心して待ち合わせができる駅
・電車に乗らずとも立ち寄りたくなる駅
小さな敷地の小さな鉄道駅であるが、単なる乗って降りるだけの駅ではない付加価値を付け、住んでみたい神戸市北区を目指していく。
そこで分棟型の平面プランと地域の新しいシンボルになる大屋根をもつ見通し・風通しの良い駅を提案した。
六甲・摩耶山系の麓の景観に馴染む大屋根と、自然光と風を感じられる駅の内部空間を実現し、駅利用者を優しく包み込む。旧駅舎跡地にはお出迎え用のベンチやキッチンカー営業にも対応した広場も併設している。駅利用者・住民・鉄道会社の新しい関係構築を目指した花山駅の新しい生活シーンの幕開けとなった。

A station building embodying the ridgeline, connecting town and people with its grand roof
The Kobe Electric Railway Arima Line, which directly connects central Kobe to the historic Arima Onsen hot spring resort across Mount Rokko, first opened in the early Showa period.
During Japan’s postwar period of rapid economic growth, large-scale housing complexes were developed one after another along this mountainous line to address housing shortages, supporting a growing commuter population traveling to the Hanshin industrial area.
However, these once-new residential towns have aged into “old towns,” facing challenges such as population decline, aging demographics, and the hollowing out of local shopping streets as suburban commercial facilities along bypass roads flourished. The spread of car-based lifestyles has also led to a steady decline in ridership on the Arima Line.
In response, we collaborated closely with Kobe Electric Railway to conduct fieldwork and hold discussions on the future of the line.
As a result, we initiated the reconstruction of Hanayama Station on its existing site, guided by three key design concepts:
A station where seeing someone off and welcoming them becomes a pleasant experience.
A station where people can safely and comfortably meet their loved ones.
A station worth visiting even without taking the train.
Although modest in scale, the new station aims to go beyond being merely a transit point—adding new value to the area and contributing to making Kobe’s Kita Ward a place people aspire to live.
The design proposes a cluster-type layout topped with a large, open roof that offers clear views and natural ventilation—creating a new local landmark.
This grand roof harmonizes with the foothill landscape of the Rokko–Maya mountain range, while the interior space allows users to feel the natural light and breeze, providing a gentle, welcoming environment.
On the site of the former station building, a small plaza has been created, furnished with benches for those greeting arrivals and designed to accommodate food trucks and local gatherings.
The new Hanayama Station marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in the daily life of the community—fostering new relationships among residents, railway operators, and the station itself.
