〈ウェスティン都ホテル京都〉は、創立130年余の大変歴史のあるホテルであり、今でも建築家・村野藤吾の優雅で気品あるデザインが残され、そのスピリットが多く受け継がれている。
2018年にリリースされた大改修のテーマは「The Queen of Elegance（ザ・クイーン オブ エレガンス）」で、このプロジェクトの最終エリアとして、既存の室内プールと客室階の一部を、一体のスパ・エステ施設に改修した。
当該地は、京都中心地から東の山の中腹、明治時代には当時の先駆的な文化人たちが移り住んだ、南禅寺界隈別荘群エリアに位置している。また、南禅寺には同じ時代につくられた、エレガントな西洋デザインの水路閣がある。このような、傾斜地から見える山の稜線や、自然の景色の中のモダンで西洋的な意匠などを取り入れた。
この水路閣から引いた琵琶湖疏水の水は現在でも館内の庭園の遣水などに一部使用しており、ホテルにとっても大変馴染み深い施設となっている。今回の温泉施設には、その周囲の自然とつながっている半露天風呂もある。改修にあたり、スパレセプションを計画した旧客室階は階高が非常に低いため、それを感じさせないように注力した。
内装は全体的に木目調とし、癒しと高級感を感じさせる空間とした。エントランスロビーから大階段で下階に降りると、ドリンクラウンジと男女脱衣室がある。男女の脱衣室は、京都・実相院の黒磨きの床にモミジの葉の色が初夏や秋に映り込むさまの呼び名である「床もみじ」「床みどり」の色彩をそれぞれのテーマカラーとした。
温泉浴室内も大胆に曲線を使い、エレガントさや自然の美を表現している。半露天風呂は、水路閣のフォルムを壁面に配し、浴槽外の水盤や植栽、また背後の華頂山の緑の借景を効果的に取り入れることで、周辺の景観との一体感を感じることができる空間とした。 (観光企画設計社)
A luxury spa that expresses the beauty and history of nature with curves and colors
〈The Westin Miyako Hotel Kyoto〉is a hotel that has been in business for over 130 years. And it still retains much of the spirit of architect Togo Murano’s elegant and graceful design.
The theme of the major renovation released in 2018 is “The Queen of Elegance.” As the final area of the project, the existing indoor pool and part of the guest room floor were renovated into an integrated spa and esthetic facility.
The site is located in the middle of the mountains east of central Kyoto, in the Nanzenji area of villas, where pioneering cultural figures moved in the Meiji era. Nanzenji Temple is also home to the elegant Western-designed Suiro-Kaku, which was built during the same period. I incorporated the mountain ridges seen from the slope and the modern western design in the natural landscape.
The water from the Biwako Sosui Canal, which was drawn from this Suiro-Kaku, is still partially used for watering the garden in the hotel, and the hotel is very familiar with this facility. The new spa facility also has a semi-open-air bath that is connected to the surrounding nature. In the renovation, we focused on making the old guest room floor, where the spa reception was planned, not feel like it was very low in height.
The entire interior is wood-grained, giving the space a sense of healing and luxury. A large staircase leads down to the lower floor from the entrance lobby, where there is a drinks lounge and changing rooms for men and women. The theme colors of the men’s and women’s changing rooms are “Yuka Momiji” and “Yuka Midori,” the names given to the colors of maple leaves reflected on the polished black floor of Jisso-in Temple in Kyoto in early summer and autumn.
The interior of the hot spring baths is also boldly curved to express elegance and the beauty of nature. In the semi-open-air bath, the shape of Suiro-Kaku is placed on the wall, and the water basin and plants outside the bath as well as the greenery of Mount Huateng in the background are effectively incorporated to create a space where one can feel a sense of unity with the surrounding landscape.
